Welcome to Primary 6

Welcome! My name is Mrs Barska and I would like to welcome you all to join us at the beginning of our P6 journey. Myself and Mrs Carle aim to provide all pupils with equitable choices in their learning by awakening curiosity through hands on experience which mirrors real life examples.

I believe that this year will allow the opportunity for pupils to further flourish in their academic achievements through creating a classroom environment where love, compassion and kindness is at the heart of our learning.

Furthermore, it is important to remember the vital importance of pupils well-being which will be continuously nurtured through the segments of SHANARRI corresponding with ‘How We Are Getting It Right For Every Child.’

TERM 1

Literacy:

This terms Literacy focus will be around "Read Write Inc." The aim of this scheme is to help all children to read fluently which will directly impact pupils ability to comprehend what they read alongside their vocabulary, writing and spelling skills.

Numeracy:

The main focus of maths in term 1 will be place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. This will be supported through resources such as "White Rose Maths" and "TeeJay mathematics."

Developing pupils metal maths and problem solving skills will also play a huge role within this term as it will enable children to put in practice the acquired knowledge. This will be achieved through the help of "Sumdog" and "Morning Challenge" tasks.

Health and Well-being:

The well-being of pupils is pinnacle to help them thrive and develop. Outdoor learning has a contributing factor to the mental, emotional and physical well-being of all. Therefore, we will aim to go for weekly walks, read outside (if weather permits) and explore the world outside for what it is which will hopefully result in pupils acknowledging the beauty of the world around them.

In addition we have a daily school program where tooth brushing is performed in school.

Topic:

Pupils have chosen the topic of ‘The Titanic’ for this term. This topic will allow pupils to naturally develop curiosity, experience hands on activities and learn about people, past events and societies.

This topic is intertwined with other curricular areas such as literacy, numeracy, science, technology and many more.

Polish language:

Children this term wanted to explore a different culture as we want to emphasis the fact we are a growing culture built from many nationalities. Understanding diversity and appreciating it is of high importance therefore, we will be learning Polish.

Additional Information:

Physical Education:

P.E will take place on Thursdays for 2 hours with Mrs Paterson where P.E kit is required, therefore I ask you all to make sure pupils are equipped with a change of clothes.

Snack-time:

Touching upon health and well-being, I have observed many pupils lacking snacks or are supplied with unhealthy sweet treats alongside fizzy drinks. I want to clarify that children are only allowed to drink water or diluting juice. Can I also add that it would be beneficial for children to have something nutritious to eat during snack time in order to keep energy and concentration levels high alongside building healthy eating habits.

School Uniform:

All pupils are required to wear:

-Grey trousers or shorts.

-Burgundy tartan pinafore or skirt.

-White polo shirt or white blouse.

-Burgundy jumper or cardigan.

-Black shoes.

School lunches:

Only classes from P1-P5 are entitled to free school lunches however, if you qualify for income based Free School meals, your child will continue to receive free lunch meals.

TERM 2

Welcome back to Term 2 Primary 6’s !

I am looking forward to what this term brings us, I am sure it will be full of learning and fun.

On top of this we want to welcome Miss Strachan who will spend this term with us together!

Numeracy:

This terms maths focus will start from revisiting division alongside looking at time, decimal numbers and angles.

This term will similarly be supported to term one through the use of " Teejay mathematics" and "SHM Heinemann"  books.

We wiil also use Maths Antics videos to help us understand different concepts.

Mental maths and problem solving skills will be continually be developed by the use of ‘Sumdog’ and ‘Morning Challenge Tasks’.

Health and Well-being:

This term in the morning, as the lessons begin, all pupils will receive a slice of toast if desired to ensure pupils are fully energized to start their learning.

The continuation of weekly walks, teeth brushing and outdoor learning will also be looked at in this term.

Substance misuse will be introduced through the incorporation of topics such as: smoking, drugs, and the usage of alcohol.

Additional to this every Friday, which we call Feel good Friday, pupils can come into school dressed as they please and after assembly we embed Article "31" Right to Play from UNCRC where pupils have the choice to spend their afternoon as they wish. This has been very successful in our class over the last term.

Topic:

We will have a final look at our Titanic topic from the previous term before we begin our new topic of "Christmas around the world."

This new topic will allow pupils to compare and contrast their own experiences of Christmas in comparison to other cultures, countries and beliefs.

This will allow our class IDL opportunities as we discover the history and geography of other cultures through this topic.

Polish language:

The continuation of our experience with the Polish Language will be progressed as we learn more phrases to help hold a little conversation with peers. New words will also be learnt surrounding our Christmas around the world topic.

TERM 3

Welcome back to Term 3 Primary 6’s !

It was so lovely seeing you all again in our first week back! As we already agreed we are ready to embrace what this term will offer in regards to our learning and many new opportunities that will be created.

It is exciting to see Miss Strachan back with us for the next few weeks and learn from this experience.

Literacy:

This term most of the class will continue to work on the 'Read Write Inc' scheme in relation to spelling and grammar. Some of us will be working on a different scheme to further develop spelling and grammar skills.

Moreover, once a week, as a whole class, we will be working on grammar together to build on our writing skills which will help us develop a wide range of vocabulary creating opportunities for these skills to become transferable for all our writing.

Comprehension and reading skills will continue to be developed weekly by engaging with further tasks.

Numeracy:

This term our focus will evolve around angles: recognising all angle types, their names, how to use a protractor, correctly, to measure angles and how to calculate missing angles.

On top of this we will look at compass points with a focus on 3 figure bearings.

Money will also be looked at deepening understanding of its value, how notes and coins are connected and how to add, subtract, multiply and divide using money. We will also develop skills that will help us to compare prices on the market helping us choose the best option for value.

In addition to this we will look at 2D shapes, special triangles and algebra.

Health and Well-being:

Term 3 we will focus on what it means to have a 'healthy lifestyle' and ways in which we can implement healthy habits for our life. We will concentrate on sugary drinks, healthy eating, food labelling, junk food and the importance of an active lifestyle.

We will continue with our daily walks as this creates a space for us all to focus on ourselves in regards to not only our physical health but also our mental health.

Teeth brushing will also continue to be implemented as well as the opportunity for all pupils to receive a slice of toast  in the morning as it is crucial to start the day off with food.

Topic:

Our topic this term will be Scotland and Scottish Heritage. This topic will allow for pupils to gain an insight into what the country they live in has been through deepening their knowledge and understanding.

We will concentrate on myths and legends, Scottish food and traditions, Scotland through the decades, Scottish innovations, famous people and Scottish inventors.

In relation to this topic we will aim to practice some Scots songs which we will perform for the elderly people at Wyndwell Nursing Home a number of times throughout this term. This idea has stemmed from our previous term when we visited Wyndwell Residence due to a huge satisfaction when singing for everyone.

We will also practice some Scottish dances which will be run by Miss Strachan for the time that she is here with us in Peterhead Central Primary.

Polish language:

Polish language will be continued creating opportunities for pupils to use words/phrases they have learnt implementing them during our daily routine.

This term the focus will be on badminton.

Snack-time:

Towards the end of Term 2 I have yet again begun to notice more pupils taking in unhealthy snacks therefore, I would like to strongly encourage to supply your child with a more healthy option like a piece of fruit as this will teach life-long healthy habits which are crucial for good health.

The rules still stay the same regarding no fizzy drinks only water or diluting juice is allowed.

School Uniform:

The rules remain the same as in Term 2 (please see above).

School lunches:

Homework:

This term homework will be implemented. To begin with there will be a reading book issued every week on a Monday alongside the reading record jotter. I ask for pupils to read the book or chapter they are given and for it to be returned on Wednesday.

Every week,  there will be a reading task set out for pupils to complete alongside their reading.

Additionally, below- there is a homework grid available, for those that desire, that contains different curricular areas to choose from. Children and parents can choose to practice any of these areas to deepen and strengthen children's learning.

Term 4

Welcome back to term 4!

This last term has approached us rapidly and  I am scared to think how quickly term 4 will pass.

We have a lot of learning to do this term but I have no doubt that it will be lots of fun and that you all will flourish preparing you adequately for your last year at Central Primary School.

This term will also be extra special, for us all, due to our newest member of staff Bonnie.

Literacy:

We will be continuing to work with 'Read Write Inc' and another scheme this term deepening our knowledge of spelling and grammar.

As we did last term, the implementation of a whole class lesson on grammar will be continued solidifying our writing skills learnt previously as well as learning and developing new skills too.

This term we have two new class novels 'Goodnight Mister Tom' by Michelle Magorian and 'Wojtek War Hero Bear' by Jenny Robertson which will be read aloud in class with comprehension questions to follow. Furthermore, these two books relate to our topic this term which is 'WWII' showing how we are crossing subjects boundaries through the incorporation of  a significant moment in history into literacy based activities.

Numeracy:

This term we will finish working on algebra and cover a new area of focus within maths: fractions. Within this we will learn to identify simple fractions, equivalent fractions and simplifying fractions into their basic form. We will then extend this knowledge by finding fractions of a quantity.

Furthermore, we will look at percentages: what they are and the connection between percentages, decimals, and fractions and how to convert them.

Lastly, we will cover length, perimeter and area in extensive detail to build a solid understanding of what each of those areas within maths entail.

Health and Well-being:

The focus of HWB within this term will be on sexual education. We will be talking about mental health and the different shapes and sizes of bodies and how they all are beautiful. We will also dive into an area of discussion in relation to 'why I don't like the way I look.'

Moreover, we will look at how human life begins: pregnancy and birth. We will also learn about human reproduction, how babies develop during pregnancy and love and relationships.

Physical Education:

P.E will stay the same as term 3 therefore, it will continue to take place on Thursdays for 2 hours with Mrs Paterson where P.E kit is required. I ask you all to make sure pupils are equipped with a change of clothes.

The focus this term will be on athletics followed by rounders later on.

Snack-time:

I am really pleasantly surprised with how many children, towards the end of term 3, have been bringing in healthy snacks.

Keep up the good work boys and girls!

Just a reminder to ensure children do not bring in any fizzy drinks or juice to school.

School Uniform:

The rules remain the same as in Term 2 (please see above).

School lunches:

The rules remain the same as in  Term 2 (please see above).

Topic:

This term our topic is on WWII. We will be learning about the events leading up to WWII and gaining an in-depth understanding of how the war begun. We will be looking at when, where and why children were evacuated during this time and how rationing impacted peoples lives resulting in them having to adapt to a life with reduced product availability. We will also look at the role of women in the war and their importance and significance within it as well as looking at what the Holocaust was and the events that happened in relation this this. All these areas of learning will provide for progression and depth in knowledge of what WWII was as well as creating opportunities for enjoyment and choice within this topic for children.

Polish language:

Within this last term we will continue learning some more polish, building our vocabulary and simple phrases.

Additional Information:

This term our class holds the responsibility to share our learning through a whole school assembly. Prior to this event we will have class discussion as to what areas of our topic the class would like to share with the rest of the school ensuing pupils voices are being heard and their opinions and choice are taken forward within this planning.

Our first week with Bonnie! - We LOVE her!

Sharing our learning is so rewarding!

We all enjoyed tasting the exotic fruits with Mrs Paterson after we learned about healthy nutrition and embedded our knowledge from last term about different vitamins and minerals important for our bodies.

We wrote a character description using similes and metaphors.

We described Mr Neville Chamberlain after we heard and analysed his speech to the British nation declaring WW2 on the 3rd of September 1939.

We imagined that it was September 1939, we were evacuees and we had to pack our suitcases.

We had to write what we put to our suitcases and explain why we took certain items.

Then, we shared our work with peers.

We participated in Mental Health chat with a Kooth member.

We learned how to sign up on Kooth to get help if we need to.

We answered some questions.

We love Friday! = Kochamy piątek!

Art 31!

We are organising P6 school assembly on the 14th of June! We have so much to do!

Please look at the outcome!

Final train and

real size Scottish soldier and a nurse.

We imagined that we were evacuees and we wrote a letter home.

Here are two examples.

Hope you liked it!
