About our teacher
Hi, I am Mr. Martinez and I am delighted to be the teacher of your child this year. I was born in the sunny and warm Spain; I love travel, photography, cinema, books, and running.
I am here to support you and make the learning journey of your child enjoyable and meaningful. P5s are like a family and we aim to become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens, and effective contributors.
About our learning in Term 4 (Newsletter)
We will try to spend time outside as we believe that the Vitamin D, which is provided by the sun, is very important for our mental health and immune system. Even we can get this vitamin in cloudy days. That is why we will do mental maths outdoor with a whiteboard; read our favourite book or class novel outdoor; or go for the daily mile one day per week to some of the local areas around the school.
The topic for this term is going to be about our local environment. We have decided to call it: "Peterhead and Scotland". That is why our classroom is decorated with some staff regarding this topic. We will be the protagonists of our learning through all the subjects: maths, literacy, science, etc. Also called interdisciplinary learning; following a series of guidelines in order to learn effectively and successfully.
P.E. is going to be every Tuesdays, after lunch, in the gym hall with Mrs Patterson. It is a requirement to bring the P.E. kit and get change in the school. Mrs Paterson is also going to be the RME teacher.
Regarding numeracy, we are learning about division and multiplication. Later on, we will focus on contents in connection with fractions and geometry. Furthermore, in literacy we are finishing the class novel "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", to continue with "Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator." We also go at least every fortnight to Peterhead Library to create the habit of borrowing and returning books from a local library for our own enjoyment of reading. Besides, in Read Writing Inc (RWI) we will do spelling for around 20 minutes every days and the spelling test is going to be on Mondays. Story writing and hand writing is going to be one of our weekly priorities.
About our school
According to the school policies, it is allowed to bring diluting juice and flavoured water in juice bottle in school but no fizzy drinks.
Finally, the big changes in Peterhead Central for this year are the following: school hours are 9am to 3pm; assembly will be every Friday at 1pm; Fun 31 will happen every Friday for an hour before home time; and pupil council will be run every Friday straight after assembly.

Numeracy

In the first weeks of term 4 we are going to focus on division in connection with the timetables.
We are learning how to divide by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 9 in connection with the timetables that we learnt in term 3.

Trip to Winter Gardens

We had a fantastic time in the Winter Gardens at Duthie Park, Aberdeen. We learnt all about tropical rainforests in South America and South Africa. We also learnt the differences between the tribes that inhabit there. The pupils got their face painted of original shapes used in these tribes and they explored about artefacts made by tribes.
Christmas decoration

We are aiming to decorate our class with Christmas crafts made by us during this month.
We have a special advent calendar with a sweet for each school day in December.
We also have a range of books about Christmas such as fiction books, a cooking book, a song book, etc.
CONSTRUCTION AREA

We have a new construction corner in our class room. This will let us develop different skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, communication and creativity.
Some of us have already built a piano, a rocket, an aeroplane, a doll's house and a football pitch.
META-SKILLS

In the month of November, we have introduced a new learning. We are exploring about different meta-skills. In term 2, we are going to learn about self-management meta-skills (focusing, integrity, adapting, iniciative).
All of them are learnt through a Lego club on a Thurday afternoon in P5 classroom. Firstly, the children learn about what each meta-skill means and then they try to apply this learning in a practical way through Lego. In the first session, we created our own Lego alphabet and we wrote our names with Lego pieces. This was to learn about focusing. In the second session, we learnt about integrity and how it could be applied when we build a Lego marble maze.

Toothbrushing talk

We had a fantastic time learning how to brush our teeth. This talk was given by a specialist NHS staff who came into our classroom with a lot of resources to show us the best way to brush our teeth.
Halloween!

I will take this opportunity to introduce our student teacher from University of Aberdeen who will be in our class until Christmas time. She is called Miss Murdoch and she is so excited to teach and learn in our P5 class.

We had such an amazing school trip in term 1!

We went to three beautiful places in Aberdeen to learn more about Scottish history and nature, as our topic this term is about rainforests and local nature.
Firstly, we visited St Machar Cathedral, where we had a tour inside the cathedral and around the graveyard of the cathedral. We also had time to listen to a lady playing an organ and made some poppy flowers. We are so grateful that St Machar cathedral donated money for our bus.
Secondly, we went to Seaton Park for lunch and play. Furthermore, we walked around the park and along a river. There, we learned more about autumn and Scottish nature.
Finally, we ended our trip at the Zoology Museum at the University of Aberdeen. In this building, we saw amazing animals from all around the world and we learned about their habitats and ways of life.

Look back in time at our Primary 4 learning and photographs!
Visit from Scottish Fire & Rescue Service
Primary 4 were recently visited by fire fighters from Peterhead Fire Station as a part of our Health & Wellbeing topic. We are are learning about the World of Work as part of 'Planning for Choices and Changes.' Pupils have been thinking of how their learning and skills developed in class will be useful to them as they leave school and join the world of work. The children were taught about the various skills needed to become a fire fighter and how we have already began to work on some of these in school!
Pupils had the opportunity to ask questions before being shown around the fire truck. They learned about other jobs fire fighters do such as animal rescue, attending accidents and helping out at Peterhead Harbour! They learned that Math and Literacy are important to join Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, and also Physical Education helps in order to carry all the equipment.
Pupils also asked the fire fighters if women are in the Scottish Fire & Rescue service. They found out that there are women fire fighters at the Peterhead fire station. One of the pupils drew a fantastic image of a female fire fighter, take a look through our image carousel to see!
Space Presentations!
Primary 4 have started work on their Space presentations!
We began by discussing various topics in groups before pupils picked their favourite to research!
They have been using iPads to research their chosen topics and are now learning to use Keynote to present their findings!

Active Learning and Flexible Seating in Primary 4!
Pupils have been enjoying active learning across a range of topics, however we found that we sometimes ran out of space! We looked at some photos of flexible seating and decided to give it a go ourselves. Pupils now have a range of seating to choose from in their classroom, and are learning to make sensible decisions about where they would like to sit.

Trip to Peterhead Prison Museum
Recently we visited Peterhead Prison Museum! During our 'Scotland' topic pupils decided that they would like to learn more about Scottish prisons.
After visiting the person, pupils decided that they would not like to stay in the prison, mainly because of how uncomfortable the beds looked!
