OUR ATTITUDE IS POWERFUL. HOW WE FEEL ABOUT AND TREAT OURSELVES AND OTHERS MAKES A BIG IMPACT- AT WORK, IN OUR HOMES, & THROUGHOUT OUR EVERYDAY LIVES.
DEVELOPING AN ATTITUDE OF POSITIVITY
ATTITUDE AT WORK
What is your attitude at work?
Take a moment to reflect on this. The questions below can be used to help you get started:
When you come to work, do you often feel stressed or annoyed? Or do you feel positive and motivated?
How do you view your coworkers and the students you work with? Are you constantly getting frustrated with them, or are you able to be optimistic and supportive of them, their challenges, needs, and feelings?
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO HAVE A POSITIVE ATTITUDE AT WORK?
Our attitude is contagious.
How we act defines how others react.
Positive attitudes yield positive results.
POWER OF POSITIVITY
Some days at work are harder than others. Sometimes things happen that just put us in the slumps. On those days, we have two choices:
1. Let the weight of our circumstances weigh us down and ruin our day/attitude, or...
2. Choose positivity. Perhaps it's not all so bad. We can speak kindly towards others and ourselves in a way that invites a positive attitude regardless of our circumstances.
It is important to remember that the coworkers and students/customers we work with have needs and feelings that we can recognize and help meet.
Remember that we are the only people who can help these students. They are coming to us with problems and issues that are very real, and even sometimes alarming to them. For some, this is their one shot at receiving a quality education to benefit and enhance their lives, and the lives of their families. So, remember to be positive and kind, even if the situation is stressful.
What can you start doing today to develop a positive attitude and focus on the needs of others?
IDEAS FOR DEVELOPING A POSITIVE ATTITUDE
Take a quick break.
Breaks aren’t a bad thing. If we overwork ourselves, we tend to get stressed out which produces a negative attitude, which causes us to react poorly to our situations and others... you get the idea. We tend to accomplish more and work harder when we take brain breaks every so often. Set a timer and take a quick walk, read a chapter of a book, grab a snack... anything that helps you realign and focus.
Start a gratitude journal.
No, this isn't silly. Writing ten things you are grateful for can boost your mood and help you see the good around you (even in stressful situations).
Breathe it out.
Sometimes we get so worked up or busy that we forget to take a step back and slow down. Taking time to just breathe and unwind can slow us down, allowing us the ability to assess the situation. This helps us realign and focus on the positive.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
Take a few moments to thoughtfully discuss the following questions as a team:
- How did an interaction with a coworker or student increase your attitude at work? Did this interaction help you feel more positive?
- Was there ever a time you were completing a stressful interaction with a student? How were you able to remain positive and have a good attitude, both during the interaction and after?
- Why do you think it is important we speak kindly and positively toward the students we work with, both during our interactions and after?
-How can you actively apply a positive attitude during your interactions with students and coworkers? Is there anything you could start or stop doing to make this part of your workday?
MAINTAINING A WORK-LIFE BALANCE
WORK-LIFE BALANCE
What is work-life balance?
Work-life balance is the state of equilibrium where a person can manage their work and personal lives with care.
Poor work-life balance can happen for several reasons, including:
- Increased responsibilities at work
- Working longer hours
- Increased responsibilities at home
Considering the needs of work and life is important to create a schedule that will allow you to achieve balance in both areas.
8 WAYS TO MANAGE YOUR WORK-LIFE BALANCE
1. The first step to finding balance in your life is to accept that there is no perfect work-life balance.
2. Find a job that you love. (And you already have it 😃)
3. Your health should be a top priority. It is important to make sure that your physical, mental, and emotional well-being is okay.
4. We are all very busy, but unplugging can be a relief.
5. Be available for yourself and your loved ones. It's important to take some time out of your day to relax and spend time with the people you care about.
6. Make sure that you set boundaries for yourself and your colleagues and avoid burnout. When you leave the office, make sure to avoid thinking about upcoming projects or answering company emails.
7. Set goals and priorities and stick to them.
