In the first year of Vlogbrothers, Hank and John often put stuff on their heads. This morphed over time into things on faces. John used to do peanut butter face (and let his dog, Willy, eat the peanut butter) but during the 2022 P4A Sarah and John admitted that John would get a slight allergic reaction from pb face. He let his kids do sharpie face until 2021. Hank usually writes donors' names or other things on his face. Other hosts will often decorate their faces to encourage donations.
