Keep your tweets to 140 characters or less. Tweets can be up to 280 characters, however, it is recommended that tweets be less than 140 characters to allow for retweets and mentions.
Proofread, proofread, and proofread again. Remember that Twitter does not allow for content editing, meaning, once a tweet gets out, besides deletion, there is no way for the original tweet to be modified.
Be Aware. Due to Twitter’s time-sensitive nature, be aware of the current trending topics to avoid missteps that can be deemed as insensitive and inappropriate. You can check to see what is currently trending by going to your home feed and exploring the “What’s happening” column to the right of the feed. Or you can go to the “Explore” page to see that same info.
Research your hashtags. Review the hashtag using Twitter’s search feature to ensure you are not inadvertently associating yourself from unwanted topics.
Share with care. Retweets should be approached in the same manner as original tweets from the account. Retweeting without additional comments can be easily interpreted as a sign of approval for the original tweet’s message.
Be judicious about following or creating ‘lists.’ Following political candidates, private companies, or causes may create a perception among people unfamiliar with the protocol of social networks that OPL is advocating.
