The 2022-23 season has been a memorable one so far for both the boys and girls basketball teams. Stouthearted efforts and a no-quit attitude have been the theme of the season for these teams. Coupled with clutch play as their hallmark, Nyack Basketball has made an admirable push towards a secured playoff spot. With both teams in the top 15 of Class A, with combined records of 20-15, the RedHawks are on the rise.
Boys Basketball Key Takeaways
Under Coach Ethan Smith’s leadership, the RedHawks came out guns blazing in December, opening their season with a Godwin Tournament Championship, followed by wins in their next seven of eight games. With an impressive Non-League Record of 12-2, Class A record of 7-5, and an overall record of 12-6, Nyack has seized control of the Section I playoffs with a home contest, sitting in a comfortable 10th place out of 26 Class A squads.
To conclude the regular season, the RedHawks will square off against competitive league rivals Pearl River and Tappan Zee at home on Wednesday, February 8 and Friday, February 10. Nyack is 0-4 against league rival opponents, but looks to change fortunes this week and head into the playoffs on a positive note.
Girls Basketball Key Takeaways
In what has been an otherwise dismal stretch in the past few weeks for the Lady RedHawks, there have been many season-defining moments. Their 8-9 record is not indicative of their impressive commitment to their sport. As a developing team with only one senior, Nyack has had to rely heavily on underclassmen. Their position in 14th place is a testament to the value of perseverance that Coach Kervins Ferdilus has instilled in his players.
MAKING HISTORY!!
# 21 on the girls’ team achieved a feat only few have accomplished in the over one-hundred year history of Nyack Women’s Basketball. Only seven players have achieved the 1000 point varsity feat, and this week, Gianna Longo joined the exclusive club in a game against Tappan Zee. Knotting the score at 16 early in the second quarter, Longo’s sweet breakaway layup sent the Rejholec Gymnasium into a frenzy. There was a stoppage in play in which family, friends, and teammates congratulated her and presented her with a flower bouquet.
