This short walk takes in The Rufus Stone and Furzey Gardens. It also includes the dog friendly Sir Walter Tyrrell pub and tea room at the gardens (no dogs).
There are three possible start points. Park either at the Rufus Stone car park or the Furzey Gardens Car Park. If buying food or drink at the pub, there is ample parking space there. This route description starts at Furzey.
1.
From the Furzey car park, head onto the exit road and turn left to continue up, away from the direction you entered by. this takes you through the woods and up toward the main dual carriageway.
2.
Continue past the electricity station on the right and then houses on the left. At the gravel road junction, turn left to continue on the track with the dual carriageway the other side of the trees on the right.
3.
Continue until you reach a gated track on the right through the trees. Take this and cross the main road using the underpass. These underpasses were originally installed to allow animal crossing points when the road was made into a dual carriageway and fenced off from the forest.
4.
Take the track to the left after the underpass and continue until you find a path to the right.
6.
Take the path to the right across the heathland and into the trees. Keep left as you approach the road and keep the road parallel on the right until your reach the Rufus Stone.
7.
This marks the spot when King William II was killed in a hunting "accident" in 1100AD. Cross the road to the Rufus Stone car park and follow the path to the left until you reach the Sir Walter Tyrrell pub. This is a dog friendly pub in which you can take refreshments.
7.
Cross the road and cross the open grass in front of you. Take the gap in the trees to the left to rejoin the path back to the underpass.
For a longer walk veer off to the right between the trees.
Retrace you steps until you reach a fork in the gravel track. Take the right hand fork and follow this, past the house on the left and into the woods.
Continue through the woods until you reach a path going sharp left. Take this and continue back to the Furzey car park.
Furzey gardens, run by the Minstead Trust, are a great place to explore (no dogs). They sell plants and have a cafe.
