Did you know that marching band can wave you out of a year of PE? Did you know that you can do band and sports? Did you know that marching band has a military background and the military love to recruit from bands? Did you know that marching band students have the same affect on the body as a professional athlete? Did you know that marching band is a sport, with competitions requiring the same amount of skill and practice as any athlete?
The answer to all of the above: yes!
If you do marching band for two years, you get out of doing your second year of PE. (As long as you pass the fitness gram.)
Most of our students do band plus sports/clubs/other VAPA classes/etc. We have a great relationship with our Athletics Department, and we work hard to make sure that students are able to do both.
Marching bands have a military background. Watch any band during a parade and you'll see military units and their bands doing the same thing. Because of this training, many of our students who join the military are already climbing ranks and using their band skills to create better military units. If you're wanting to join the military; this is where you want to be!
In one of the videos below, you'll see scientists attaching equipment to a marching band member and recording their vital signs as they do a run through of their show. In that brief time, they found that the band member had the same vitals as a professional athlete during a game.
While we don't look or sound like a traditional sport, or make points based on getting a ball through a goal; we still have the same skill, dedication, practice, and drive as any sport. Where else can you have only two minutes to impress judges to beat out other bands in your district and San Diego?
