There have been multiple studies that have been done since the times of Ancient Greece on the importance of The Arts in everyone's life. More recent studies have pointed to the importance in music and the development of a student's brain. With COVID and the return to school; music's role in supporting and healing mental health is more important than ever!
With more Universities, Colleges, Trade Schools, Professions, and even the Military looking to find the very best of the best from the tens of thousands of applications they receive daily: they're turning to a student's involvement in The Arts- especially music- during their High School years to make their selections. More and more are picking music students over AP and Athletic students each year, so making The Arts an important part of a student's education is important.
Oh, and did we mention our brand new state-of-the-art performance space?! We are so excited to not only perform in this amazing new space, but to record and create music in our modern era. The possibilities are endless!
Students who take music score higher and do better in Math and English.
There are more jobs in The Arts than just a performer. We as a consumer only see/hear the final product (performer) and not all the thousands of hours and hundreds of support members (lawyers, accountants, producers, carpenters, film crew, sound technicians, etc) that goes into putting a single scene of a film or minute of music. So, a career in The Arts is possible and- after COVID- is in need of people.
Trade professions within The Industry pay very well and are in desperate need of our students to learn the trade and take over an aging workforce. Many of these are apprenticeships who are looking for students to start learning and working even in High School!
Music is involved in all of the main subjects on our campus, including language and even PE (sorry, Autoshop).
We're one of the few schools in the districts who allow our students to be in band and in Athletics. Most of our students are involved in more than one activity on campus (sports, clubs, Link Crew, ASB, councils, etc) and we have a strong connection with Athletics and all of our programs on campus.
Many of our students graduate with Honors, and even as Valedictorian and Salutatorian!
Music students are better at problem solving and creative thinking. This makes students more desirable in the workforce. More medical and science schools make an Arts education mandatory for admission.
In fact, most scientists, technicians, engineers, mathematicians, and anyone else in the science and math fields either studied music (like Einstein and multiple astronauts) or were inspired by The Arts to make their discoveries. For example: if it wasn't for Star Trek, Star Wars, and Harry Potter; we wouldn't have smart phones, high functioning lasers, or the beginnings of cloaking devices.
SDSU's Computer Science Department have a high percentage of Marching (band) Aztecs and Music minors in their program. Many Computer Scientists hired by the Department of Defense have been hired because of their involvement/education in music.
