Ensuring Stability in the South China Sea
The problem of ensuring security in the South China Sea region has been controversial since the 70s, as Brunei, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Vietnam have made overlapping claims.
Claimant states are interested in retaining or acquiring the rights to the estimated 11 billion barrels of untapped oil and 190 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, fishing stocks, and strategic islands, as well as the control of vital shipping lanes. The People’s Republic of China maintains its overwhelming claims under the Nine-dash line, a set of lines that appeared on Chinese maps encompassing the whole area.
The recent issue of Taiwan and its controversial status of sovereignty has also influenced politics in the region. The disputes continue, as the last few years have seen military pressure from China as well as the heavy involvement of the outlying United States. How can the international community put an end to these? What can you do to guarantee that the region is not pressured by unwanted military presence? How can each country be ensured of its maritime security?
If you wish to debate this and find out how one of the most significant disputes of the century could be solved, join us in the SPECPOL Committee of MUNtenia!

The Chairpersons
Hi, everyone!! My name is Ekaterina, but I go by Katya! I'm a junior at "Spiru Haret" National College in Bucharest, and I'm mega excited to chair the SPECPOL Committee at MUNtenia, especially alongside my co-chair David.
Though I started as a shy delegate, I now cannot see myself without my passion for MUNs. These experiences mean so much to me, as I get to meet some of the most talented and lovely people, for which I'm grateful, as well as learn unexpected skills and debate in-depth heated topics. I'm also a history enthusiast, and I enjoy singing and playing the piano in my free time.
I hope the delegates of the SPECPOL Committee will push themselves to get out of their comfort zone and have fun, as this topic is a spicy one! I cannot wait to meet you all!
Hello! I am David, a senior at Petru Rares National College in Piatra Neamț.
While I have experience as a delegate, this will be my first time being a chair. Since I discovered MUNs, I have fallen in love with international relations and diplomacy, and I haven’t looked back. Together with my co-chair Katya, we promise the best experience at a MUN.
I cannot wait to see you debate!
