Reducing the Impact of Sanctions and Embargos on Civilians
It is common knowledge that sanctions, along with embargoes, make up the first line of defense when combating the abuses and misconduct of states and organizations. Although usually imposed on financial, political and military grounds, these approaches often fail to protect the citizens, unintentionally harming them in the process.
Violations of the rights to life, health, social services, and protection of human dignity occur among common people, as opposed to the elites which remain unscathed and continue to divert resources towards perpetuating economic uncertainty and worsening quality of life.
How can nations make sure that sanctions and embargoes target the oppressors and not the oppressed? Are there alternatives to regulating the international landscape, while preventing humanitarian collateral damage? Join the ECOSOC and have a say in the safety and future of thousands across the globe!

The Chairpersons
Hello everyone! My name is Alex, I am a junior at “Saint Sava” National College and I will be chairing the ECOSOC alongside one of my dearest friends, Clara!
MUN Conferences were my first encounter with public speaking and leadership. They were the ones which taught me how to research, think for myself, and create successful and impactful arguments. Two years ago, when I blindly enrolled as a delegate for the first time in a committee, I was not even fully aware of what “SOCHUM” meant, let alone how far my delegate journey would take me, thus igniting my passion for everything political science. Now, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to give back to a community I hold so close and dear to my heart, guiding the next unsure delegate along the path of debate and diplomacy.
I can’t wait to meet you all and make this conference a truly unforgettable one!!
Hello there! My name is Clara, I am a junior at "Saint Sava" National College and I will be one of the chairs of the ECOSOC Committee, alongside Alex!
I am the type of person who doesn't like to sit still and in these MUN conferences, I have found the perfect way to satisfy my need for "action", as well as meet an amazing assortment of brilliant people and expand my knowledge on various important topics. Having already chaired this committee before, I’ll be here to guide you and ensure that you discover the many facets of the ECOSOC.
I am beyond excited to be a part of this conference as a chairperson and I am looking forward to meeting you all!🤍
