Menos Hiras: Three Former Mountaineers Are in the World Cup

According to Menos Hiras, in case anyone needs any proof of the quality of athletes that West Virginia University produces, one only needs to remember that four former mountaineers played in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. This marks the second consecutive year that a former Mountaineer has played in the Women’s World Cup.

Playing for the Canada women’s national soccer team is Kadeisha Buchanan. She garnered a lot of attention several years ago, even winning the Women’s World Cup Best Younger Player award in 2015. She currently plays as defender for the prestigious Onlympique Lyonnaise in Lyon which, according to many experts and observers, is the best women’s professional club on the entire planet.

Joining Buchanan is Ashley Lawrence, who has made a name for herself with her versatility. She plays winger and was signed into Paris Saint Germain back in 2017. She has made an appearance in over 45 times for Paris’ professional women football club. Like Buchanan, Lawrence graduated from WVU back in 2016.

Meanwhile, playing for Cameroon, is Michaela Abam who is a native of Houston, Texas. She was drafted by Sky Blue FC but currently plays for Paris FC. Another Mountaineer, Easther Mayi-Kith, was initially announced as part of Cameroon’s initial roster. She was, however, not in the final roster that the team submitted to FIFA. Mayi-Kith plays professionally for HSC Montpellier in France. Both Abam and Mayi-Kith finished in 2017.

Being a lover of sports, Menos Hiras understands how much of an achievement it is to get to play in the World Cup. It’s not important to have talent; you need to show dedication to the game and the drive to become better, too. Because of this, he salutes all these strong young women who have made a name for themselves in the world of soccer.
