HMB-12

Type:  River Run

Location:  Columbus, OH

Gates:   66

Elevation Change: N/A

Difficulty: Tricky

This track earns the difficulty rating of "Tricky" because of the sheer number of bridges that beg to be flown under.    Some of the danger comes from their relatively low height, and the rest of the rating is because they're always in awkward places along the route.  Don't underestimate the value of a notch of flaps when attempting lots of bridges close to each other.    It will slow you down appropriately and add just a bit extra control as well.   As mentioned before, don't get discouraged with this.  It's tricky for a reason, but once you can successfully navigate this course, you will have amazing command of the aircraft you chose.   So choose wisely.    I selected one of the VL-3 variants for the photo-shoot because of the short profile.    But other planes are certainly capable.

The city is Columbus, OH.   The newly created airport of HMB-12 is not located in the best of locations.   It was tough to find a nearby vacant lot to build, but if you're willing to look the other way when the red flags pop up, some options present themselves.    Apparently I took over the Hap Cremean Water Plant Sludge Treatment Facility.   At least I didn't lower property values when I moved in, and the odor is hardly noticeable once you get a good sinus infection started.

The race course starts near the sludge treatm... I mean, the airport and follows the Scioto river downtown, where it does an about-face and backtracks until it can find a new route north along the Olentangy river.    Once you can complete the course without ending up as a new bacteria strain in the sludge, you can be very proud of your accomplishment.   This is a tough one.    I promised myself that I would not release this one to the public until I could fly it 3 times in succession without any time penalties.   That took a bit of work, so I don't mind saying that this is one of the most difficult tracks to complete.   Take your time.    Just completing this without any penalties is cause for celebration.
