Responsible water use and sanitation practices is practiced within the MCU community to ensure the health and well-being of the campus and nearby communities. The university operates a sewage treatment plant (STP) that helps maintain proper waste management and water quality. MCU also recycles water and utilizes rainwater storage systems, which account for nearly 50% of the university’s total water consumption, advocating for water conservation and accessibility.
MCU on Clean Water and Sanitation
I. Water Consumption
More than 50% of the water used in the university is inbound or from treated/extracted water.
II. Water Usage and Care
MCU Sewage Treatment Plant is running automated using Sequencing Batch Reactor Technology.
MCU is committed to keeping our environment clean and safe through monthly testing of wastewater effluent, and submission of results to the government agencies as part of our self-monitoring report. MCU also maintains its sewage treatment plant and its filters to ensure that our recycled water produced is within the set parameters and is safe for reuse.
MCU provides safe drinking water through drinking water fountains that are connected to the main water system of the university. The Campus Development Department maintains the drinking fountains through a regular schedule of cleaning and replacing filters. Additionally, Department of Health (DOH)-compliant outsourced providers within the vicinity of the university supplies the purified water for dispensers.
MCU invested in water conservation and reduction of water use, and we are now at 88.52% of water efficient equipment. We aim this school year to have 100% water efficient equipment throughout the whole campus.
The MCU commons were surrounded by body plant landscapes through the use of drought-tolerant plants to minimize water usage.
III. Water Reuse
MCU leads the way in water recycling by implementing a sustainable program centered around the following programs:
Recycled Water (through STP)
Rainwater Reuse System
IV. Water in the Community
MCU is committed to maintaining a clean and safe environment by strictly following government standards for wastewater discharge. Our wastewater effluent is tested every month, and all results are regularly submitted to the appropriate government agencies as part of our self-monitoring report.
MCU actively promotes conscious water usage on campus through signages, advisories, and orientations.
