The university practices waste segregation by providing designated bins across the campus. MCU also promotes recycling to encourage environmental awareness and responsibility among students and staff.
MCU on Responsible Consumption and Production
I. Operational Measures
MCU is committed to protecting the environment by having standard practice on waste disposal, as well as minimization of plastic and disposable item use. The university reduces paper and plastic use on campus through the 5S Program in Workplace Management: Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain. This program helps keep work areas clean, organized, and efficient while minimizing waste.
MCU also uses Data Mobility and Microsoft 365 to handle requests and share information digitally and reuses scratch papers for printing, reducing paper use.
The university encourages concessionaires to stop using single-use plastics, switching to eco-friendly packaging and reusable utensils.
In 2024–2025, MCU successfully treated a total of 0.14 tons of toxic waste, primarily from electronic materials and laboratory chemicals. The management of solid, liquid, and gaseous hazardous waste is a government-mandated responsibility. MCU operates a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) that supports proper waste segregation and disposal practices across the campus. While MCU personnel regularly attend chemical handling and safety training programs conducted by the National Government to promote continuous improvement and uphold environmental and occupational safety standards.
II. Proportion of Recycled Waste
MCU measures the amount of waste generated and recycled inside the university. Out of the total 29 tons of organic waste produced, around 14 tons were successfully treated through different sustainability practices. While about 9 tons from 18 tons of inorganic waste produced in MCU were treated. The university continues its composting activities, reused leaf litter for landscaping, and turned biodegradable waste into compost and soil enhancers. MCU also minimizing paper use through digital submissions, promoting the use of refillable containers, and discouraging single-use plastics within the campus.
III. Publication of Sustainability Report
MCU Sustainability Report is annually published on our MCU Sustainability Website.
