Costasiella kuroshimae "Leaf Slug"
Costasiella kuroshimae "Leaf Slug"
Leaf slugs are small, green sea slugs with a flattened body and broad, leaf-like projections that increase surface area and help them camouflage in their environments. The slugs develop their green color from their diet and are typically found in shallow coastal waters where they graze on algae and available vegetation. This incredible creature undergoes a process called kleptoplasty meaning it steals chloroplasts from the algae it eats and retains them in its own tissues. Ultimately, this gives the slug its green color and lets it indirectly perform photosynthesis for extra nutrients.
