Polychaetes are one of the most abundant and ecologically important group of benthic animals. Known for bright colorations, many polychaetes are recognized by their paired parapodia in which function analogous to limbs. These structures make them excellent crawlers, burrowers, and swimmers in their marine environments. Like flatworms and ribbon worms, most have a retractable proboscis that can be everted from the mouth to acquire their food item. Some species have developed sharp, powerful jaws/pinchers that can be used to capture and ingest their prey.

Cerebral ganglia in the head region that acts as a brain for neural processing
Nerve fibers
Sexes usually separate (dioecious), some species are hermaphroditic
Fertilization typically external with both eggs and sperm released into the water
Egg stage: Small and spherical, yolk used during this stage to provide nutrients
May be free-floating or attached to a substrate
Trochophore larva: Tiny, ciliated larval stage that feeds on plankton
Helps disperse animal throughout water column
Metamorphosis: larva settles into substrate and develops into a juvenile worm with parapodia and setae
Some species have direct development and skip this stage
Adult stage: Reproductive system fully developed with the capability of mating
Found in all oceans at all depths
most common in shallow waters and intertidal zones
Inhabit soft-sediment benthic environments
