Phylum Annelida is a unique group of worms particularly characterized for their repeating body segments. Each individual segment is equipped with a pair of flattened parapodia and small bristles, known as setae, giving the worm enhanced precision and locomotive abilities. In addition, gills are often found in each segment to maximize gas exchange. Most species are found in shallow waters and benthic communities, however these animals can be found at any depth in any ocean. Some are free living carnivores or feed on benthic organic matter. Other species have been known to live in tubes and are suspension feeders as a result. With over 10,000 species, they are the largest and most diverse group of segmented worms.
