In the series Similarities, the artist created her own visual language – a system of symbols that do not represent individual letters or words, but carry a deeper, universal meaning. They function as signposts that open space for reflecting on fundamental questions of human existence: possibilities for action, inner decision‑making processes, and the directions our lives may take. The symbols embody emotional and spiritual states, orientations inward and outward.
A characteristic feature is that each symbol was created in both a positive and a negative form – complementing one another like yin and yang, like two poles of a whole. This duality points to the tension and simultaneity of opposites: a charged yet creative balance that also resonates with the dynamics of family – closeness and distance, acceptance and resistance, light and shadow, continuity and change. In their interconnection, a quiet but powerful unity emerges, permeating the entire series.
The very material of the works reinforces their message: they are made from handmade paper produced from the artist’s family book archive. Pages marked by visible traces of use, imprints of handwriting, books passed down from generation to generation – all of this was broken down, pulped, and reassembled into new handmade paper. This process transforms personal memory into a new medium, where the past becomes part of the present.
The visual work resembles a map of memories: layers of handmade paper intertwine with symbols that carry archetypal meaning. The surface is gently relief-like, with a visible structure of fibers that reveal and conceal fragments of the original books – much like a family preserves and simultaneously transforms its own history.
