A: How many rooms are there in your house?
B: There is the kitchen, two bedrooms, the living room, and a bathroom. So, they have six rooms. And yours?
A: My house has seven rooms: the kitchen, two bathrooms, two bedrooms, the living room and a basement.
B: Is your basement underneath?
A: Yes.
B: We can’t have basements underneath in New Orleans. There’s too much water. You’re lucky, you.
A: Maybe, but y’all live in Louisiana and I live in Indiana. Y’all are lucky!
B: Hm. You’re right about that.

C: OK, mærsi!

C: I need the toilet! Where is it?
D: It’s up the stairs. The second floor.
C: OK, thanks!
D: You’re welcome.
C: Thanks so much; I’m almost exploding!
D: It’s nothing, but be quick! It’s going to end up badly if you pee on my grandmother’s floor.

Check out the use of the verb manké, mank in Dialogue 2. Usually, it means ‘to miss’: Mo mank twa / I miss you; Mo manké bòs-la / I missed the bus. Here, it has another meaning: ‘to almost do something’. To manké manké ça, non?! / You almost missed that, huh?!

Another thing you might have missed is the name of ‘New Orleans’ in Creole — this can be Nouvèl-Òrléan, or, more commonly, just Lavil, which just means ‘The City’.
