Unit Introduction

In this unit, you will learn to say 10 animal words and 1 phrase pattern as well as 1 sentence pattern to express how many animals you have. You will also learn to read some key Chinese characters to add to your existing bank of Chinese characters.

Term 2 LESSON 1

Learning intention

Learn to say 6 animal words in Chinese;
Learn to recognise and write the character “xiǎo小” in Chinese.

Success criteria

I can say the 6 animal words in English when I hear them in Chinese;
I can remember and say the 6 animal words in Chinese after some practise;
I can recognise and write the character “xiǎo小” with the guidance.

Activity 1

Go through PPT – Animals in Chinese Part I and follow the voice recording to practise the 5 hobbies in Chinese.

Follow the instruction on PPT-learn the character ‘xiao’, practice to read and write.

Term 2 LESSON 2

Learn to say 10 animal words in Chinese;

I can say animal words in Chinese when looking at pictures;
I can match 10 animal words with English and Chinese.

Revise the vocabulary with a song - Sing the song with video – I love my animals and practise the words.

Revision on numbers counting 1-10;
Revision on animal words;
Learn the animal measure word “zhī”;
Learn to count animals in Chinese phrases.

Success criteria/What should we achieve by the end of the lesson?

I can count animals in Chinese phrases;
I can follow the stroke orders to write down the character 只.

Activity 1

Watch the video clip and follow the song to sing. Recall how to count numbers from 1 to 10 in Chinese.

Activity 2

Play the 'Flashcard' activity to help yourself recall the pronunciation and meaning of animal vocabularies. Then test your learning by playing the 'Match' game below by dragging the words to their corresponding meaning/photo/pronunciation.

Activity 1

Listen to the song and revise the phrase pattern of counting animals in Chinese.

Activity 2

Play the memory game by clicking one word and one picture at a time to match them up. The cards would turn green colour if the match is right; otherwise the cards would turn red if it is wrong and please try again.

Activity 3

Watch the instructional video and learn the sentence pattern ‘I have…’ in Chinese.
