Behavior Expectations

Denman students are expected to show Denman Pride at all times by being safe, respectful and responsible. The SFUSD Student and Family Handbook details the rights and responsibilities of all SFUSD students.

When possible, Denman staff use Restorative Practices to address behavior that does not meet expectations. Our hope is that students will take responsibility for their actions, gain empathy for those harmed, and improve their behavior. However, there are behaviors that will result in disciplinary consequences, particularly if repeated. These consequences include lunch/afterschool conferencing, community service, mandatory caregiver conference, Saturday School (as an alternative to suspension), or suspension

Items Not Permitted at School

Because student safety is our priority, possession of the following items is not permitted at Denman:

  • Knives or weapons of any size, including imitation, toy, or “practice” weapons.

  • Firearms of any type, including toy or imitation firearms.

  • Laser pointers or toys (may injure eyes)

  • Vape pens or other drug paraphernalia

  • Lighters or matches

  • Explosives, including “poppers” or firecrackers

  • Mace, pepper spray or other toxic substance or poison

Prohibited items will be confiscated. Consequences range from community service to Saturday School or suspension, based on the item. Students in possession of weapons or toxic or illegal substances must be picked up by an adult. Fighting or threatening with a weapon will result in suspension and possible expulsion.

Classroom Behavior

Every student has a right to learn without distraction. The following behaviors are not permitted in the classroom because they disrupt learning:

  • Off topic talking/talking over teacher

  • Touching or taking others’ belongings

  • Disrespectful language/tone to staff

  • Refusing/debating adult instructions

  • Out of assigned seat/walking around

  • Walking in and out of class

  • Throwing objects

  • Physical play

  • Shouting and Noise-making

Repeated disruption will result in classroom-based consequences, including lunchtime/after school conferencing. Chronic disruption will result in a referral to an administrator or counselor and further consequences, including community service and/or a caregiver conference. If a student does not complete their consequences, or if a student receives three referrals for disruption, a caregiver conference will be scheduled and Saturday School will be assigned.

Profanity, Slurs, Harassment and Abusive Language

Profanity (words not permitted in a G-rated movie) is not permitted at Denman, as all our students are minors. Repeated profanity will result in a phone call home and litter cleanup. Continued use of profanity will require a caregiver conference and may result in referral to Saturday School.

Racist, sexist, anti-LGBT and anti-disability slurs make students feel unsafe and unrespected. Hate speech is not allowed at Denman at any time in any part of the school.

Sexual harassment is defined as, “unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal, visual, or physical conduct of a sexual nature.”

Consequences: The first incident of hate speech or harassment will require a parent/guardian conference and be addressed through restorative conferencing and restorative or educational consequences. Any further incidents will result in a referral to Saturday School or suspension.

Verbal Abuse of Staff is defined as using profanity, slurs or threats against or about a staff member. Our staff have the right to a work environment free of abuse. The first incident will require a restorative conference with the staff member involved and a restorative consequence, as well as a caregiver conference. Additional incidents will result in Saturday School or suspension.
