Students cannot learn if they are not in the classroom. Denman students are expected to meet the high school readiness standard -- 96% or better -- for attendance. In addition, staff cannot support the safety of students who are in unsupervised areas or who leave school grounds during the school day.

In a classroom, a student is on time if they are in their assigned seat when the second bell rings. In P.E. a student is on time if they are in the locker room or on their roll call number. A student is tardy if they are outside of the classroom without a pass or in the classroom but not in their assigned seat when the second bell rings.

If a student is tardy for school they have a 15-minute window (between 9:30 a.m. - 9:45 a.m) to report straight to class in the morning. After 9:45 a.m., students are to report to the attendance office with or without excuse to retrieve a tardy pass, then report immediately to class. Class periods following the first period of the school day have the same protocol as first period, students will have to report to the attendance office for a tardy pass and return to class if tardy by 15 minutes or more.

Students who are anywhere other than in their assigned location without a pass 10+ minutes after the second bell rings are considered to be cutting. Walking out without a pass or being absent at second roll call in PE is also a class cut.

Students are not allowed in the building before first bell. After school, students must be signed in to Beacon and in their assigned area. During lunch, students have 10 minutes to reach the supervised area where they will spend all period. Students must have a pass to enter the building during lunch.

- seen by an adult or on camera in an unauthorized area before or after school or during lunch
That student may be assigned a lunchtime conference with a counselor or teacher. If they fail to attend this conference, or are assigned a lunchtime conference three times in a quarter for any attendance-related infraction, a mandatory conference with a caregiver will be scheduled and the student may be assigned Saturday School.

If a student is absent from school there are two types of absences they may fall under, excused or unexcused. Both types will still show up on a student attendance profile report. There is more than one way that you can report an absence.

- Call into the school on the morning of the day in which the student will be absent to report the absence by phone (415-469-4535)
- Send the student with an excuse or doctor's note, when the student returns to school from the day that they were absent.

For an full-day or partial-day absence to be marked excused, the caregiver must inform the school of the reason for the absence; caregivers must provide documentation of any absence within a 3-day period.The SFUSD Student and Family Handbook defines excused and unexcused absences. Medical appointments are only excused for the time of the appointment and transportation, not for the full day.

Truancy is defined as 3+ days of unexcused absences and/or 10+ days of excused absences. Three unexcused tardies equal a full day absence. A truant student and their caregiver will be required to attend a conference with the attendance clerk to sign an attendance contract. Further truancy will result in a referral to Pupil Services.

Students are allowed to leave early from school with permission from parent/guardian. If a student needs to leave or be released early from school there is more than one way to report it.

If a student leaves the building or yard without being escorted by staff, a caregiver will be notified and required to pick up the student.
