All About Ms. Kim

Bio

I was born in Guam, a small but warm and cozy island in the Pacific! As a Korean American, I spent my early childhood in Korea, and I moved to Vietnam when I was in 3rd grade. I attended an international school in Vietnam throughout my elementary, middle and high school years, as an English learner with my mother language being Korean. As I graduated middle school and headed onto high school I started aspiring to become an English teacher.

Based on my interests, I have chosen to major in English, which I have gained my BA degree for through UC Berkeley. Although I came to California to attend college, I fell in love with the active passion that I saw around me, which made me decide to pursue graduate education in San Francisco. This happened through the NYU Teacher Residency Program based in California. I have earned my MA degree as well as teaching credential through this residency program.

This is my 5th year teaching, and 4th year at James Denman Middle School, as this is the school I taught at as a student teacher during residency with Ms. Shillingburg. I have student-taught 8th Grade English, and have taught 6th Grade Humanities, 6th Grade English Language Development, and will be an advisor for 7th graders. For anyone interested, I also advise a K-culture club for students who are passionate about K-pop and K-dramas!

Teaching Philosophy

The most important concepts that I value are Communication and Responsibility. Throughout school, we not only learn to be a successful academic, but we transform into a more capable and mature people. The process can be confusing and needs lots of patience and understanding of all parties involved. Communication helps reduce stress coming from learning and applying new knowledge and experiences, increases rapport among teachers and students, and overall provides a means of free expression. In order to harmonize and cooperate as a member of a class, school, and community, we should also be responsible for ourselves, from basic things such as being a productive and diligent learner, to larger things such as self-care and self-love. As we focus on the values of Communication and Responsibility, we would all grow into a both empathetic and independent group of scholars by the end of the year.

Interests

I am a peaceful and quiet person who enjoys calm hobbies rather than active interactions. I enjoy painting and journaling while I listen to music that I like, I like reading comics, and I also like binge watching dramas and movies! Ever since the pandemic had taken over the outside world, I have started experimenting with a new hobby of cooking. Although I am not a professional, the number of dishes I can cook is increasing!
