All About Ms. Steneck

Bio

Hello!! My name is Camille Steneck and I was born and raised here in San Francisco. I live in the Mission District with my daughter who is going into 11th grade. I am lucky to have my whole family here in the Bay Area. We are French American  I attended university in San Francisco.  I have been teaching  English and History for 18 years at Denman Middle School.

Teaching Philosophy

My approach to teaching is experiential. I believe that we learn by being active and involved in our subject matter. For this reason, I like to have students engage in acting out moments in history, creating art, going on field trips, and working together as a team. I like to give my students the tools to teach each other through their own research and creativity. Leadership is a transformative tool, that helps empower students to build confidence and take ownership of their learning, and pass it on. I teach through a social justice lens, and have my students look critically at the state of our current affairs and their historical roots. Students think critically about events that have impacts in their lives, and begin to imagine and plan solutions.

Interests

As a teenager, I was lucky enough to attend SF School of the Arts for dance. This was the beginning of a lifetime passion for dance. When I am not teaching I am in the dance studio studying dance from West African and the Caribbean. My love for dance takes me traveling to different parts of the word to continue my studies.

I love to spend time in nature camping and hiking all over California. I attend musical concerts often, my favorites are: reggae, salsa, and hip hop. What kind of music do you like?
