All About Ms. Gin

Bio

This will my 18th year teaching at James Denman Middle School and 20th year overall. When I started at Denman, I taught seventh grade math/science and eighth grade math. This year I am teaching sixth grade math, science, and coding, and an 8th grade advisory. In additional to my teaching duties, I am also the sponsor of the Yearbook and Robotics Clubs and the coach for the Denman Robotics Team.

I grew up in San Francisco and went to Jean Parker Elementary, Marina Middle, and Wallenberg High School. I have a BA in Psychology and a teaching credential from the University of California, Davis. I also have a MA in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Educational Technology from the University of Phoenix.

Before I went into teaching, I worked at several non-profits. I became inspired to teach when I took a course at the local community college about arts and children. I started my career as an elementary school teacher, but after getting my MA, I decided to try middle school. I am never going back to elementary.

Teaching middle school students is the best job in the world! At Denman, I am able to integrate my passion for learning and teach real world concepts related to science, math, engineering and technology. I can’t imagine myself doing anything else!

My Classroom

Teaching Philosophy

As a teacher, I believe it is important to maintain a student-centered classroom. Planning and preparing with the students' education and well being as a priority can do this. I believe students' needs and lives should be put first when adapting classroom curriculum and instruction methods. Student should not be taught only the skills needed to pass a test. They also need to learn useful life skills. I believe all children can learn if given the right environment and materials. I believe that hands-on learning is essential. Students need to use manipulatives. Students need to perform experiments. Every student learns at a different pace and through a different modality. It is important to plan and integrate the different curriculums and to make sure that all students are meeting and achieving standards. To ensure that all my students learn, I strongly believe in the use of multiple intelligences to guide my teaching. It is my responsibility as their teacher to discover each student’s strength and help students learn by using those strengths.

Interests

In my free time, I love to hang out with my family, build stuff, create digital content, read, and cook. I particularly like realistic fantasy and stories with magic especially the Harry Potter series. I really enjoy being able to curl up with a book and listen to music (especially Broadway musicals) in the background. I have a lot of fun trying new recipes and experimenting with old ones. I'm also a big fan of the San Francisco Giants, San Francisco 49ers, and the Golden State Warriors.
