Some spells count as ceremonies, allowing them to interact with abilities that modify those, and can have additional spell slots spent on them. These are denoted by the word Ceremony in the spell description. Please fill in a Short Term Request Form to the Imperial Clan box to inform a referee when you want to perform a ceremony and what your intentions are.
Most spells will have some necessary vocals which you will need to use when casting them. Otherwise, you are free to make up your own vocals to fit your character. All effects generated from spells count as mystical effects.
Kage spells may only be cast in the final respite period of the day, from 7pm until Time Out.
This list is available to all Shindōshi, in line with clan restrictions shown in the elemental alignment table.
The earth splits asunder and morphs to one’s will, grasping at its foe with an iron grip.
Necessary vocals: “Bind” and “PARALYSIS”
You may point to a target within 30 ft of you and call “PARALYSIS”, a mystical physical effect. If successful, this will render the target fully immobile for 10 seconds.
If the duration of this call is different from 10 seconds, the new duration must be included in the vocals following the call.
With a purposeful snap of your fingers, a single bright spark startles even the toughest.
Necessary vocals: “Blind” and “STUN”
You may point to a target within 30 ft of you and call “STUN”, a mystical physical effect. If successful, this will stop the target being able to attack or cast spells for 10 seconds, only able to block and stagger backwards.
If the duration of this call is different from 10 seconds, the new duration must be included in the vocals following the call.
Shugenja share a connection to a world beyond understanding. As such, they can tap into that connection to commune with forces beyond mundane means.
Necessary vocals: “Commune”
You may open a channel of communication with a specific being. By default, you may only use this spell on Kami unless told otherwise. The being may or may not answer or appear, depending on their whim, availability, or relationship with the caster.
Communications may take the form of a conversation with an OOC referee playing as the disembodied voice of the being, may take place as a conversation inside the caster’s head via a referee, or may take the form of a physical appearance or something else.
You may not communicate with a Kami of your elemental deficiency.
This requires a referee to cast.
With a flourish, air encapsulates and hides what you do not wish to be found.
Necessary vocals: “Conceal”
You may target a small object to mystically conceal until dawn. You should attach a yellow ribbon to the target object. This item will be undetectable by mundane investigation.
The threads that weave magic together can easily be untangled by one who understands the loom from which it is made.
Necessary vocals: “Counter”
You may negate the effects of one other spell cast within 30 feet of you, provided you are casting the counter spell at the same time or almost immediately after it.
This only works to counter ranged spells from the basic spell list. You can counter advanced ranged spells if you know the spell.
You cannot counter a counter spell.
The gentle flow of water rushes over the ailing, washing away what causes harm.
Necessary vocals: “Cure”
You may remove a disease, poison, or similar effect from a target. This will remove all ongoing effects and will halt the progress of the ailment but will not heal HP.
There may be some ailments that are not affected by this spell.
Exhale and feel oneself take root. The earth can sense what does not belong.
Necessary vocals: “Detect Penumbra Taint”
You may see how much Penumbra Taint a character or item possesses. For characters, this is a combination of their lasting (beads) and fleeting (cards) Taint.
This may require a referee to cast.
Summon earth and hurl it with pinpoint accuracy at your foe to destroy the weapon they hold.
Necessary vocals: “Blast” and “SHATTER”
You may point to a target with a weapon within 30 ft of you and call “SHATTER”, a mystical physical effect. If successful, the weapon is shattered beyond use for combat and may not be used to strike or parry.
With ferocity, you throw a punch like dragon’s breath and hurl fire with ease.
Necessary vocals: “Blast” and “REND”
You may point to a target within 30 ft of you and call “REND”, a mystical physical effect. If successful, this will destroy the target’s armour, reducing them to 0 AP.
A splash of cool, refreshing water swiftly restores the body.
Necessary vocals: “Heal”
You may target a character within touch range and heal them 4 HP. This cannot take a character over their maximum HP. This stacks with the Mizu’s Blessing advantage.
If the amount healed is different from 4 HP, the new amount must be included in the vocals.
Connect your soul to another, binding you together. You may share the power you each hold separately to make a stronger whole.
Necessary vocals: “Karma”
1 use per event, you may link yourself to another character for the reminder of the event. Once connected, you combine your Kū pool together and may share Kū points.
In order to use a Kū point that belongs to the other, the pair must verbally agree to transfer it across.
Call upon the Void to imbue you with your pick of the elements.
Necessary vocals: “Align”
You may spend 1 VP to cast a basic spell you have not learnt, with the exception of spells from elements you cannot cast.
You feel out our own heart’s fire and summon it forth into the palm of your hand to light the way.
Necessary vocals: “Light”
You may create a mystical light source for minutes equal to your Ka RV. This should be phys repped by a suitably concealable or IC prop to represent said light source.
This spell will also reveal items hidden or concealed by Kage abilities.
This may require a referee to cast.
You are able to restore the flow of one’s movement.
Necessary vocals: “Remove”
You may point to a target within 30 ft of you and remove the Paralysis effect on the target.
A disturbance in the air calls to you, and with a whisper the hidden item is revealed.
Necessary vocals: “Reveal”
You may reveal all items or characters which are mystically concealed within 30 ft of you, denoted by yellow ribbons. This spell will not reveal anything that has been mundanely concealed or hidden.
Some items may be hidden by powerful abilities and might not be revealed by this spell, but you will get a sense if something is still concealed nearby.
This may require a referee to cast.

You may see the mystical nature of characters, items, or locations within 30 ft of you, denoted by red ribbons. You may then read the power cards of all items and locations you have been able to see, but not those of any characters within the area.
This spell will not reveal anything that has been concealed or hidden.
This may require a referee to cast.
You call upon the primal fear of the dark to terrify your foes.
Necessary vocals: “Blast” and “COMMAND: FEAR”
You may point to a target within 30 ft of you and call “COMMAND: FEAR”, a mystical mental effect. If successful, this will stop the target being again to target you with abilities for 1 minute.
You shroud an item in a cloud of shadow, hiding it from all but the most observant eyes.
Necessary vocals: “Shroud”
You may target a small object to mystically conceal until dawn. You should attach a yellow ribbon to the target object. This item will be undetectable by mundane investigation.
This concealment can be mystically dispelled such as through the Light spell.
You weave a veil of darkness and cloak yourself with it. So long as you stand still, you are but a shadow in the night.
Necessary vocals: “Veil”
You may target yourself and place your hand in the air to vanish from sight. Whilst hidden, you cannot move or be detected by mundane or physical means. The effect ends when you move.
This concealment can be mystically dispelled such as through the Light spell.
You use the fabric of void to reach into another’s soul and tear it from its body.
Necessary vocals: “Blast” and “SUNDER”
You may spend 1 VP, to point to a target within 30 ft of you and call “SUNDER”, a mystical physical effect. If successful, this will immediately put the target on 0 HP and in their grace period.
Like a crashing wave thundering against the shore, you rip a weapon free.
Necessary vocals: “Blast” and “DISARM”
You may point to a target within 30 ft of you and call “DISARM”, a mystical physical effect. If successful, this will cause the target to drop any weapon held in their primary hand.
Like a hurricane, you form the purest of winds in your hands to blast back any foe who opposes you.
Necessary vocals: “Blast” and “KNOCKDOWN”
You may point to a target within 30 ft of you and call “KNOCKDOWN”, a mystical physical effect. If successful, this will knock the target off their feet.
These spells must be individually purchased via the Spellcraft skill in line with clan restrictions shown in the elemental alignment table.
You can only counter advanced ranged spells if you know the spell.
There are times where a Kami is disturbing the balance. With your connection to the elements, you can force it out at the risk of its wrath.
Necessary vocals: “Banish”
You may banish a being from the immediate area. The being may not return to within a mile of the shugenja’s location for any reason until the next respite. By default, you may only use this spell on Kami unless told otherwise.
Be aware that this may anger the being and other characters, or may not work on sufficiently powerful beings. You may only use this spell on the same being once per day.
With a sharp inhale and a hard stomp of your feet, the very world itself rumbles beneath you.
Necessary vocals: “Earthquake” and “MASS KNOCKDOWN”
You may call “MASS KNOCKDOWN”, causing the earth to shake and knock all characters within a 30 ft radius off their feet. You are unaffected by this.
For OOC safety reasons, a referee may decide that this spell may not be used or may counter this spell. Check with a referee before casting.
After studying the properties of jade, you can use it to harm the tainted.
Necessary vocals: “JADE”
You may point to a target within 30 ft of you and call “JADE”, a mystical physical effect. If successful, and the target has 3+ Penumbra Taint, they take 4 damage. If they have less than 3 Taint, they take no damage.
Your hand burns white hot like metal in the forge, searing all it touches.
Necessary vocals: “BURN”
You may add the call “MYSTIC BURN”, a mystical physical effect, to a melee strike with a small or H2H weapon. If successful, this will deal 5 damage to the target.
Only through the power of the void is anything truly pure.
Necessary vocals: “Purify”
1 use per day, you may attempt to remove the power card from an item or person by performing a ceremony. You may use this spell without restriction to cleanse unpowered mundane vessels for ceremonies.
You reach out into the void and grab ahold of their soul, claiming it back and binding it into the body it once called home.
Necessary vocals: “Revive”
You may spend 1 VP to perform a ceremony to resurrect a character that has died on the same day. You will need:
The full body of the target.
The target will need to talk to the game team prior to returning, and may come back changed in some way.
The target must be willing OOC and be able to permanently burn a Kū point IC.
This requires a referee to cast.
You send your mind back, dreaming of the courtyard, the many hours you spent amongst the falling leaves, sitting beneath the tree. You find yourself there once more, but this is not a dream.
Necessary vocals: “Sight”
You may project your senses to a location you have already been to, and are able to see and hear what is going on in that location for your Kū RV in minutes. You may spend 1 VP to be able to talk to characters in the other location.
If this location is on site, you may put your hand in the air and walk over to it. If it is off site, you should inform a referee and they will return to you with a summary of what you experience.
You will not be physically present in the other location, but as a mystical presence. Some beings will be able to detect this. In addition, you are still susceptible to mystical mental effects, and Penumbra Taint.
This may require a referee to cast.
Like a fountain bursting forth, your power flows and reaches out to touch and restore them.
Necessary vocals: “Heal”
You may point to a number of targets equal to your Sui RV +1 within 30 ft of you and heal them 2 HP. This stacks with the Mizu’s Blessing advantage.
If the amount healed is different from 2 HP, the new amount must be included in the vocals.
It is said that a powerful shugenja can embody the explosive rebirth of a phoenix and bring back a recently departed soul.
Necessary vocals: “Phoenix”
You may perform a ceremony to resurrect a character that has died within 5 minutes of the start of the ceremony. You will need:
The body, or at least the heart or the brain, of the target.
A container purified by the Kū Purification spell to hold the soul.
As part of this ceremony, you will need to trap their soul in the container. Then, at any time before the end of the day, you may place their body next to a large fire and open the vessel to return the soul to the body.
The target will need to talk to the game team prior to returning, and may come back changed in some way.
The target must be willing OOC and permanently burn a Kū point IC.
This requires a referee to cast.
A blade forms in shadow, and pierces corporeal forms to strike within.
Necessary vocals: “Sting” and “THROUGH”
You may point to a target within 30 ft of you and call “THROUGH”, a mystical physical effect. If successful, this will ignore the target’s armour, dealing 3 HP damage.
You are able to slip into the realm of shadow and traverse it as clearly as if it were a well trodden path, reappearing later.
Necessary vocals: “Shift”
You may, when in contact with a shadow, you may put your hand in the air, and go OOC. You can then move to another shadow of your choice within 30 ft, and reappear there. This should take as long as it takes for you to move to the new location.
You form a powerful inferno in your hands and hurl it at your opponent.
Necessary vocals: “Spear” and “THROUGH”
You may point to a target within 30 ft of you and call “THROUGH”, a mystical physical effect. If successful, this will ignore the target’s armour, dealing 3 HP damage.
You whip a cyclone in your hands and hurl it to spear your foes.
Necessary vocals: “Spear” and “KNOCKDOWN, 4 damage”
You may point to a target within 30 ft of you and call “KNOCKDOWN”, a mystical physical effect. If successful, this will knock the target off their feet and deal 4 HP damage.
The shadows engulf and protect you as though you are their own.
Necessary vocals: “Armour”
You may target yourself or another character within touch range and grant them +2 AP. This cannot take a character over their total body hit limit.
This armour lasts until it is broken, and cannot be repaired.
You summon the stalwart powers of earth to bolster your allies and keep them standing.
Necessary vocals: “Ward” and “Resist Knockdown”
You may target a character within touch range and grant them a Ward against the next Knockdown effect targeting them.
This Ward lasts until used, or the next respite period. A character may have only 1 Ward on them at a time.
With a gentle tap, water ripples like a pebble thrown into a pond and repels ill health.
Necessary vocals: “Ward” and “Resist Ailment”
You may target a character within touch range and grant them a Ward against the next disease or poison effect targeting them.
This Ward lasts until used, or the next respite period. A character may have only 1 Ward on them at a time.
Your words are carried aloft on thermals, taking wing to then be whispered to your recipient.
Necessary vocals: “Whisper”
You may send a short message via a Wind Kami to a character you are familiar with. The message should only be one sentence long, and the target should be someone you know the name or alias of, or have met them and can give a suitable description. If the target has this spell too, they can respond.
This takes as long as the Wind Kami needs to deliver it. If the message is not urgent, you can write it down and deposit it in the Imperial Clan box.
This may require a referee to cast.
These spells are only available to the characters who created them, or characters who have been taught them at an event.
These spells must be individually purchased via the Spellcraft skill in line with clan restrictions shown in the elemental alignment table.
You can only counter advanced ranged spells if you know the spell.
You are able to temporarily entice the kami, drawing them to your target, enhancing their latent talents.
Necessary vocals: “Blessing” and the chosen element
You may target a character within touch range, increasing the Ring Value (RV) of the chosen element of the spell by 1. If this would take them over the limit of 5, it does not grant them any new abilities beyond their RV now being at 6. If the target contributes to or performs a ceremony of that element, they count as adding an additional +1 to the power they add to that ceremony.
The element chosen cannot be using the elemental deficiency of either the caster or the target. This lasts for one day and the target cannot be the recipient of this spell again until the next day.
Water pools in the caster's hand to form a formidable spear of ice that pierces the target.
Necessary vocals: "Spear" and "THROUGH"
You may point to a target within 30 ft of you and call “THROUGH”, a mystical physical effect. If successful, this will ignore the target’s armour, dealing 3 HP damage.
The target's own shadow turns against them, as they plunge a dark blade into the target's heart.
Necessary vocals: "Blast" and “SUNDER”
You may point to a target within 30 ft of you and call “SUNDER”, a mystical physical effect. If successful, this immediately drops a character to 0 HP and puts them in their grace period.
You weave and bind the element of water needed to heal the target but tie it off before it releases. You then link this bound spell to the targets life essence.
Necessary vocals: “Ward” and “Heal”
You may target a character within touch range and grant them a Ward that upon the character reaching 0 HP will activate and Heal the character for 1 HP. This stacks with Mizu’s Blessing. If the amount healed is different from 1 HP, the new amount must be included in the vocals.
This Ward lasts until used, or the next respite period. A character may have only 1 Ward on them at a time.
You are able to channel the purity of jade into those you touch, guarding them against a brush with the Penumbra.
Necessary vocals: “Ward” and “Resist 3 fleeting Taint”
You may target a character within touch range and grant them a Ward that will absorb the next 3 fleeting Taint they receive, after any reductions from abilities or powers have taken place.
This Ward lasts until used, or the next respite period. A character may have only 1 Ward on them at a time.
