The Great Clans - Setting Information
All player characters are samurai from one of the six clans. Clan members have innate loyalty to each other, and honour within a clan is paramount; what one clan member does can affect all the others. Players are very strongly encouraged to make costume choices to incorporate the colours associated with their clan and to incorporate symbols and logos of their clans into their character’s kit and costume.
Note that there are a limited amount of player spaces available for each clan in order to ensure balance and a focus on individual storytelling within the game.
Each clan has a primary and secondary element.
Each clan has an elemental deficiency, meaning shindōshi from these clans are unable to cast that particular element.
Each clan has a set of abilities which all the clan members can start with.
Some of these abilities have certain requirements without which characters cannot use them. For example, if an ability is for courtiers only, a shindōshi, bushi, or bushi specialist would not have access to it. A courtier specialist would unless it specified core courtiers only. Similarly, each clan has abilities that only a character with the Duelling or Calligraphy skill can use.
There are six main clans you can join:
The Hinotori are the closest to the Kami in Tokoro, having devoted many decades towards studying them, and are able to connect to them in a way no other clan can. This clan is more focused on mystical advancement and their shindōshi are said to be able to wield all of the elements. Their colours are yellow, orange, and red.
The Kani guard the borders between Tokoro and the Shadowlands. Many have served time upon the Wall and are knowledgeable about Penumbra Taint and Shadowlands creatures. This clan is more focused on martial advancement and their bushi are considered to be great defenders. Their colours are dark blue and grey with orange or red highlights.
The Ryu have a connection to the mystical no other clan can emulate. They have a strong spiritual tradition, and their monks often are trusted advisors and spiritualists. This clan is more focused on mystical advancement and their mystics are said to be able to access powers even the Hinotori cannot. Their colours are green with metallic highlights.
The Sasori are said to be the guardians of Tokoro’s seedy underworld, fighting an unseen war, but this might just be another one of their lies. The skill of their assassins, however, is no deception. This clan is more focused on courtly advancement and their courtiers are rumoured to have large information networks. Their colours are black with red highlights.
The Shishi make up the majority of the armies of Tokoro. Although known for their warriors, they are also deeply connected to their ancestors, more so than other clans. This clan is more focused on martial advancement and their bushi are often the authoritative voice heard giving orders in a battle. Their colours are gold, yellow, and brown.
The Tsuru are the clan of poise and beauty, and known as the creators of the courts. They have a great deal of influence, and their duellists are the most graceful of all the clans. This clan is more focused on courtly advancement and their courtiers are said to be present in every court in the land. Their colours are sky blue and white with silver highlights.
Hinotori are respected as the premier magic using clan; eloquent and forthright, and constantly seeking enlightenment. The clan wear the colours of fire: incandescent yellows, dazzling oranges, and bright reds, with flashes of metallic gold and silver. They tend towards an apparent arrogance, and can be slightly removed. Their symbol is the phoenix.

They can be either a bushi specialist or courtier specialist.
You may purchase Kū advantages in any order. Your first two starting advantages must be from your primary or secondary elements.
Shugenja only: You can perform a ceremony calling upon a Kami (Chi, Fū, Ka, or Sui) to imbue an item with elemental energy. You can do this a number of times at an event, up to your Kū pool. Additionally, 1 use per day, when performing a ceremony which calls upon the elements or Kami, you can do so without expending a spell slot. If you spend more than one spell slot during the ceremony, only one is free. This stacks with the skill Ceremony Master.
Non-shugenja only: You are more receptive to Kami powers, allowing you to spend Kū (Void) points to contribute to Kami focused ceremonies. For each VP you spend, you count as adding that many spell slots, even if the lead shugenja does not have the Ceremony Master skill.
1 use per day, you may call “RESIST” against a mystical effect targeting you.
Requires Duelling skill: 1 use per day, you may call “RESIST” against all effects, mundane and mystical, from a melee blow, still taking a single point of damage from the strike.
Requires Calligraphy skill: You can read and write the Hinotori Clan cypher.
