The lands of Tokoro are not some lawless realm where strength of arms decides one’s place in society. It is a place of complex bureaucracy and order, bound by Honour, Glory, and Influence.
To show a character's changing social station and deeds, this is abstracted to four values on which a character is ranked 1 to 10. The listed ways one can obtain these values are only examples and many other actions might be seen by the game team or crew as deserving of them.
These values are a form of social currency that can be spent in play to change and affect the world. There will be various mechanisms for this at the various courts, such as visiting shrines of Kami to receive a blessing, or writing to an ally in a nearby court to get material assistance. Sometimes these will be stated ahead of time and sometimes these uses must be discovered at the event.
These are:
Represented by white beads and cards. How closely a character shows the values and virtues of Tokoro, and as a player going above and beyond to embody the play style of Jade Throne. Players might gain Honour for a character's sacrifice of something, creating moments of story and drama, or fighting in a particularly spectacular manner.
Represented by yellow beads and cards. The great deeds and incredible feats a character has achieved that will be sung of and applauded. Players might gain Glory for slaying a mighty oni, casting a new spell unheard of by other Shindōshi, or publicly being honoured in court.
Represented by blue beads and cards. The strength of one's allies and favours accrued by a samurai that they may call on in hard times. Players might gain Influence from blackmailing a notable lord, saving an allied commander on the field of battle, or completing a favour for an influential magistrate.
Represented by black beads and grey cards. Please see the Magic & Penumbra Taint section for more information.
The minds of mortals are fickle and the deeds of last year are easily forgotten when confronted with more recent acts. The majority of the above given out will be fleeting. Fleeting cards will be available for the current event the character is attending, after which the stories of their actions will no longer carry weight.
Sometimes however, if multiple impressive deeds are performed within a short period of time, or if a significant enough single deed is performed, then a character might, at the game team and crew’s discretion, be awarded a lasting point of Honour, Glory, or Influence (represented as beads). They will then start all future events with an additional fleeting card of the relevant value.
At any point during an event, a character may cash in their fleeting cards of the same value with a referee (either Honour, Glory, or Influence) to grant themselves a lasting bead of that value. A courtier may cash in fleeting influence on behalf of another character, provided that they contributed at least 1 to the total.
The amount required varies based on your value level: ( Current lasting level x 3 ) + 2
For example, going from 3 Honour to 4 would cost 11 fleeting Honour, but going from 7 to 8 would cost 23.
A character’s position within the bureaucracy of Tokoro. With the Glorious Deeds background, a character can begin with a title. Otherwise, players can work in game to further their character’s career and earn one of the many ranks and titles available to them. Characters with higher ranks are more likely to be listened to in their sphere of influences.
For example:
Jade Champion - One of the highest achievable roles within the Empire. The Jade Champion handles all matters of magic and mysticism across the Empire, and leads the Jade Legion.
Voice of the [Clan] - A role of honour that allows a one to speak on behalf of their clan in court with great authority.
[Clan] Magistrates - An individual who enforces the law within their clan.
Emerald Magistrates - An individual who carries out the will of the Emerald Champion, in the name of the Emperor.
Jade Magistrates - An individual who carries out the will of the Jade Champion, in the name of the Emperor.
Clans all have their own cyphers to protect confidential information from falling into the wrong hands. Anyone with the Calligraphy skill may start play knowing their own clan’s cypher. There may be opportunities for characters to learn other clan or group cyphers IC. There may be consequences if characters teach or learn cyphers without the correct permission.
To represent writing that has been written using a cypher, the words “This is written in X cypher” should be obvious at the top of the section that is cyphered, where X denotes the type of cypher used.
For example, if a character wished to use the Tsuru Clan cypher, they would write “This is written in Tsuru Clan cypher”.
