Summer Classes and Camps at Ithaca Generator
Post date: Jun 18, 2013 3:24:31 PM
Ithaca Generator has a variety of one-day and weekly classes and camps this summer. Opportunities include the following. Space is limited for each of these, and some classes have fees. For details and to sign up, visit Ithaca Generator's Summer 2013 Class Descriptions.
Open Lab - Hydraulic Judobots
Use syringes, tubing, and wooden sticks and blocks to construct a machine with a hydraulic lifting arm and a pivot. At the end of the workshop we will have some friendly competition as our “Judobots” pair off across the table, pushing and flipping each other out of the ring!
When: Monday, June 24th from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM
Instructables Build Night: 3D Printing!
IG has been invited to participate in monthly build nights hosted by Instructables. Each month the build night will focus on a specific material or process. For this month, the process is 3D printing. We’ll be using 123D and Tinkercad plus $150 credit at Shapeways (thanks Instructables!) to make awesome stuff. Come on down!
When: Tuesday, June 25th from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM
DIY Scratch Games
Scratch is a free visual programming environment developed at MIT that lets kids make games, animated stories, and interactive art. This class will consist of two sessions, the first to go over Scratch and the types of games you can make with it. In the first session we’ll also come up with ideas for games that we want to make. In the second session, we’ll show off games we made at home and try to come up with solutions for any problems we ran into while making our games.
When: July 17th and 31st from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM
Pinhole Camera
This is a one time workshop where we will make and use Pin-Hole Cameras, also known as Camera Obscura. A pin-hole camera uses an extremely small hole in a very thin material to focus light onto film. You will build a camera, walk around downtown, and set it up somewhere interesting for an exposure. We will return to IG to make a homemade developer from coffee, vitamin C and silver halide, develop our film together, and discover how the prints turn out!
When: August 3rd from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Tabletop Board Game Design Class
This class is an opportunity to create your own board game with the help of professionals and peers, and use software and specialized equipment to illustrate and manufacture game components. Stacia & Sean Humby, the awesome & friendly owners of Enchanted Badger Game Shop, will help you to develop and refine your original game concept. Illustrate the board and other features with guidance from Steve Ellis (a freelance illustrator for D&D and Magic The Gathering) and use Ithaca Generator’s 3-D printers and a CNC machine to craft the game pieces. Your original game creations will be unveiled to the public at a specially dedicated Game Night!
When: 4 Sundays in August from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM
Revamp Camp
Invent, learn, tinker, create! Explore exciting new technologies in this collaborative Xraise/Ithaca Generator Summer Camp! Invent new functions for the most popular microcontroller prototyping platform on the market, the Arduino. Learn to program a microcontroller using an open-source programming environment. Hook it up to sensors and affect your environment using lights, motors, and other actuators! Explore open-source 3-D sculpting tools and print your creations on IG’s 3-D printers. Take fieldtrips to see these new technologies in serious science action at Cornell, and be inspired by guest visitors and their interesting creations, such as electric bikes and a robo-DJ! Tinker with trash, and re-use recycling to bring your projects to life. There will be a student showcase at the end of the week to show off our inventions.
When: August 19th to 23rd from 9 AM to 4 PM
