Ithaca Generator Announces Fall 2013 Offerings

Ithaca Generator has announced offerings for Fall 2013. Classes vary from 3D printing, small electronics circuitry, animation, and even a Dr. Who 50th Anniversary Party! Space is limited and fees may apply.

Ithaca Generator is a community of inventors, crafters, designers, engineers and artists. You can visit their member-supported "makerspace" in downtown Ithaca at 116 West Green Street or call (607) 269-7436.

Open Lab: Light to Sound Converter Circuit

In this Open Lab, we will build a small electronics circuit that will convert light into sound. With this, we will be able to hear the flickering of overhead lights and the gentle song of light coming through the leaves of trees blowing in the wind.

When: Saturday August 31st 4-6pm

Cost: $20

Introduction to Twine: Create with Hypertext

Twine is an open source program for creating hypertext stories/essays/games. Come get an introduction on how to use it!

When: Sunday September 8th 4-6pm

Solar 101/501: Basics of Solar Energy with Extra Detail for Graduate-Level Geeks

Solar energy presentation from a technical, economic, practical, and political perspective. Discussion of how the technology works and what one can expect when shopping for and choosing a system.

When: Saturday September 14th 3pm – 5pm

Cost: Free

Learn 3D Design with AutoDesk 123D

Use the new suite of web-based tools from Autodesk to create cool things in 3D!

When: Tuesday, September 17th 6:30pm – 8:30pm

Cost: Course is free, but printing costs 10 cents per gram.

Arduino Basics: A Little Programming, A Little Electronics, A Little Making

In this course participants will learn how to setup a computer to connect to an Arduino, how to extend Arduino system with shields, and much more!

When: Thursday evenings (Sept. 19-Oct.10) 6:30pm – 8:30pm

Cost: $45

Animation Smorgasbord

Learn to animate with a variety of materials over 5 studio-style classes! Each week you will be introduced to a new animation style, including: flipbook, pixelation, stop motion, and sand or paint animation. You will learn basic software to sequence images and add music/sound effects. Drawing skills not required.

When: Saturdays 10am – 1pm (September 21st – October 19th)

Cost: $40

Welding

You will learn various welding processes. First you will learn to use an oxy-acetylene torch to cut, bend and weld steel. You will also try a bit of brazing. Next you’ll learn to use a TIG welder to weld steel. After gaining some experience with steel, you will learn to TIG weld aluminum. You will learn construction skills by first working as a group on a project for the makerspace and then by working independently on your own project.

When: Session 1: Wednesdays 6:00pm to 8:00pm: 9/25, 10/2, 10/9, 10/16, 10/23, 10/30

Session 2: Thursdays 6:00pm to 8:00pm: 9/26, 10/3, 10/10, 10/17, 10/24, 10/31

Cost: $200 for members, $240 for non-members

*NOTE: This class will be held at the Welding Annex (Clarkberg Garage) at 150 Giles Street.

Scratch Club (September)

Discuss and share your Scratch projects while learning from others! People making games, animations and art in Scratch are all welcome. Open to all ages. This is a club and while there will be demos and presentations, it is not a class. It is helpful if you have a laptop to bring so you can work on your projects during the club.

When: Last Sunday of every month, 2-4 pm

Easy to Advanced Websites with WordPress

By the end of this class you will have a professional-looking WordPress Web site for your business or hobby. WordPress is free software that enables you to make a website simply by logging in, adding text and images, and clicking publish. It’s easy to customize your Web site’s appearance and to add functionality like shopping cart systems and booking software.

When: 10/5, 10/12, and 10/19 (three consecutive Saturdays) 2pm – 4pm

Introduction to Raspberry Pi

*NOTES: Participants should be 14 years or older and comfortable using and configuring computers. Programming experience will be helpful but not required. Required materials: RaspBerry PI Model B, USB Keyboard, USB Mouse SD Card. Students can supply, or can buy from the instructor for $65 (Contact ken.rother@gmail.com ahead of time if purchasing materials from instructor.)

Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Party!

Doctor Who fans unite to celebrate the 50th anniversary! Show off the extent of your geekiness with a Doctor Who trivia contest, watch some favorite episodes, get your picture taken with our cardboard TARDIS, enjoy theme food and bond with fellow Doctor Who fans of all ages. Extra love goes to anyone who dresses up as a Doctor, companion, TARDIS etc!

When: Saturday November 23rd Afternoon/Evening, time TBD
