Code Red Robotics Hosts Ithaca High School Technology and Engineering Open House

When: 2–4 PM on February 8th

Where: IHS Tech classrooms and Cafeteria

On Saturday, February 8, Ithaca High School’s FIRST (For the Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Code Red Robotics Team is hosting its third annual open house. From 2:00-4:00 p.m. in the Ithaca High School (I.H.S.) Technology classrooms and Cafeteria, accessible from Lake St parking lots, community members are invited to visit and observe a Code Red build session.

Science, technology, engineering, and math organizations in the district will also participate in the open house including the I.H.S. Technology Student Association (TSA), I.H.S. Technology Department, IthacaSTEM Advocates and Junior FIRST Lego League (Jr.FLL) teams. Code Red members provide support for several of the Jr.FLL teams of elementary students ages 6-9, similar to the role Code Red’s adult mentors..

The I.H.S. TSA will share exhibits from technology themed competitions. Featured projects include Promotional Graphics, CO2 Dragster Design, Catapult Challenge, Problem Solving. The exhibits will offer an interactive experience showcasing technology, engineering, and everything in between.

On February 8, Code Red Robotics will be five weeks into the six week build season. Members work 28 hours per week on top of their normal school schedules to build their robot for the 2014 FIRST Robotics Competition game, Aerial Assist. Aerial Assist is played by moving 2-foot diameter exercise balls across a field in order to score points into one of four goals positioned on the opposite end of the field. In this game teams are encouraged to pass the ball to one of their two alliance partners in order to score even higher upon making a goal.

Code Red Robotics receives generous support from the community and local companies. Sponsors include Kionix, Autodesk, BAE Systems, BorgWarner Morse TEC, CBORD, Cayuga Medical Center, Tompkins Trust Company, Tetra Tech, Vector Magnetics, AccuFab, Incodema, Cognitive TPG, Innovative Metal Works, U-Haul of Ithaca, Ithaca City School District (ICSD), ICSD Board of Education, Ithaca High School, and Purity Ice Cream.

FIRST Code Red Robotics, an I.H.S. student organization, is an associate of Ithaca STEM Advocates, an affiliate of the Ithaca Public Education Initiative (IPEI). IPEI is a not-for-profit organization that believes the education of every ICSD student is enhanced through community connections and support through engagement, collaboration, gifts, and grants. IthacaSTEM Advocates fosters appreciation, knowledge, and application of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) by encouraging involvement in STEM-related activities, clubs, teams, events, and classes in the ICSD.
