AY2021: READING SKILLS (TUE. 3) COURSE EVALUATION
Below is the feedback from my wonderful freshman students from Reading Skills I/II (Tue. 3).
I appreciate all the comments and advice from you all and I will improve my teaching skills based on your words. Once again, thank you so much for your feedback 🙂
It is time for self-reflection. Please write about your own reflection as a learner of this course.
I was able to remember to submit the assignment. I think my vocabulary improved by writing essays using my own expressions. Also, reading the essay sometimes gave birth to new ideas. I think that if I become a member of society, I will have more opportunities to use English, so I want to study more.
I was a bit careless in my consideration of other people’s essays. However, I think I was able to express my thoughts sufficiently in English.
What I learned in this class is critical thinking in Engulish. it is difficult for me, but I try to do that by using peer review. Now I can do critical thinking a little. So, I will keep doing that and I want to be person who use it freely and achieve something great.
I haven’t been able to read all of the essays that the professor sent. I think, by reading the essays and absorbing the various opinions, I can use them to my future life. I would like to read more essays.
I wrote long essays, so writing long sentences in English now feels easier than before. I learned about different people’s views on freedom of expression and the death penalty. I learned how to write a paper in English. I will refer to how to write citations and references when I write papers in English in the future.
Through this class, I became able to understand the importance of critical thinking and write compelling sentences. This ability can be used not only in English but also when writing a dissertation in another class. In the course of writing several essays, I discovered that I tend to be too concise in my writing, so I knew I needed to be more detailed in my writing.
It’s been a while since I’ve tried to communicate my thoughts in English. I realized that it is important to be willing to share your thoughts with other people in English. I think I will need to do the same thing in the future when I have to talk to more people from other countries at work. Many of my work were submitted just before the deadline. I was able to submit my assignments each time, and I think I did well. This will be useful for framing sentences when giving a presentation in English.
The class was very meaningful, not only for the knowledge of English, but also for the exposure to current issues such as the death penalty and freedom of expression.
(evaluate) By learning how to effectively cite reliable literature that is highly relevant to the content, I was able to make my essay more persuasive.
I become curious about English and thinking about issues. I use much time to thinking deeply about them. However, my bocabrary is so little that I could not write good English sentence.
I found it fun to read written works and write my thoughts so I want to read more books. I learned that I have to write concrete examples to enhance my opinion’s persuasiveness. Also, it is imporetant to reflect on my works after leaving some time.
When writing essays, I noticed that I tend to write facts and data rather than my own opinions. However, I think that I have become better at conveying my opinions logically by continuing to improve on what was pointed out in the peer review.
I could read more carefully whether the sentences are facts or opinions and distinguish the genre. What I learned in this class is critical thinking and how to read critically. I can use these skills when I write something in English and I can read English sentences on Twitter, Youtube comments, and so on. In peer-review assignments, I could write them according to the guideline, so they could be patterns. But I couldn’t have a rhythm to do my work. I think I could join the classes actively, but I didn’t decide when to do my assignments. I’m going to use this knowledge when I travel abroad or read something.
I learned how to write an English essay. Citing English sentences became an instructive experience.
I could write text longer and consider structure than before. I could notice that speaking actively is important without hesitation. I could use this thing when I talk with foreign people. I could submit all works by deadline. But, when I participate group works, I should have spoken more actively, I think. I can learn deeply by sharing essay’s comment with peers. And, I could find peer’s good points that I want to refer to. I think that things that I learn this course will be extended for reading something or speaking English more natural speed.
In this class, I read English sentences that ranged from stories to practical issues such as freedom of expression. I am now able to have my own opinions about various issues. I think I can use it in meetings and other places where I can express my opinions. I feel like I’m still not very good at critical thinking. I want to be careful because accepting everything is not always the right thing. I was not good at communicating my thoughts, but I think I have acquired a little more ability to express myself by making an effort so that others can understand. I think it can be used to understand others without being limited to one perspective.
Through this course, I learned how to cultivate my critical thinking ability and how to write academic essay. Critical way of thinking is very important when we study something or communicate with others. So, I will use make use of the ability which I acquire through course.
I learned how to write reasons. It is very important to write the reasons clearly when I tell the positive or negative part on the article and essay. It makes my opinion stronger not only writhing, but also when I discuss. I often forget writing reasons. If I will have a chance, I want to read my peer’s essays finding questions. I think I should do deep thinking. I think critical thinking is important at any scenes. Especially, when I see some news or academically article. I want to careful not to take these ideas without much thinking of myself.
I can get the ability to write and communicate my idea and opinion. What I think could have been improved is the ability to actively tell my opinion. I can express my opinion in a group, but when it comes to the whole group, I tend to hesitate, so I would like to improve on that. In this class, I also learned how to cite. Therefore, I would like to use MLA when I write thesis and read English literature in the future.
I learned many things in this course. I never known the knowledge of death penalty, to pony my and so on. This knowledge makes me develop my thinking and perspective, so it will be good for the society. My essay writing skill has improved, but it is not completely the best. So I will try my best after finished the class.
In this class, I learned what it takes to write an essay and I was able to practice it. I also learned how to use citations, which I think I will be able to use in my future essays.
Through three essay writing sessions, I learned how to write and read literature. I also realized that I am not good at writing conclusions. I learned the ability to write while referring to the materials.
I could remember what I learned and I will apply some lesson for other time.
I learned how to think critical, and it is important to connect other knowledge and think deeply, not just accept the opinions soon. I think I can use this when I read paper, article or document in classes and in seminar. Also I can use (or I should be able to use) knowledge of work cited and how to think critical in future work. I have could talk in English more in break-out room to improve my skill of speaking and listening to English.
Throughout the class, I felt it was very meaningful to deepen discussions with my classmates about what is normally taboo. He also found that even if his logic and the logic of the other party were inconsistent, they were not wrong with each other, only their way of thinking was different.
I tend not to give clear opinions because I think, I am afraid of being attacked for different ideas or the opposite opinions. However, I noticed that most of the opinions were acceptable. They are diverse. This notice tells me to get more confidence. I will get my concrete idea and learn more about how to explain logically.
Trough the class, I was able to read text and express my opinions in about 500-words. What I learned in this class is critical thinking, which I can use to think about social events.
I became better at writing my opinion in English than before. Reading and writing English skill are utilized in job hunting and graduation thesis. So, I want to use many things which I learned in this class in the future.
Through English, I was able to learn about events and culture in Japan that I had never known before. I was surprised that I could understand so much from the English material, but I feel that I can gain a broader knowledge if I read the Japanese material more. I was able to improve my English skills with the help of my proactive partner because we were divided into groups. Compared to that, I was not as proactive as I could have been, so I regret that part.
I think I wrote my essay and solve the question actively. I was able to verbalize my thoughts in English, evaluate the sentences of others, and use them for my reflection. However, I felt it was difficult to communicate others online.
Often I submitted my assignments just before the deadline, so sometimes I didn’t have enough time to submit my assignments in a quality I was fully satisfied with. It was not good.

Thank you so much for a year!!! I enjoyed reading essay and conversation with friends.
Not only reading, the part of writing sentence is very important I discover. I will write and tell my idea to someone hard!
I am glad to have met you! I wish I could have met you in the classroom 🙁
I often watch Korean dramas on Netflix, too!! Thank you very much 🙂
There was a time when I was silent without discussing in class, and you pointed out that. Thank you for that. I was aware that online discussions were held in my room alone, so I couldn’t be conscious that I had to attend the conversation more actively and provide a topic by myself if necessary. I am now aware of that and am deeply regretting.
