It was in Nazareth where Mary was visited by the angel Gabriel who pronounced to her she would birth the Savior of the World (Luke 1:26-38). Nine months later, Joseph and Mary were required by Roman law to travel to their ancestral town of Bethlehem for a census (Luke 2:1-7). After Jesus' birth, Joseph and Mary returned to Nazareth for a brief time and then fled to Egypt to escape the threat of King Herod. After perhaps a couple of years, Joseph was told in a dream that King Herod was dead. So they returned to Israel and settled in Nazareth, the hometown of Joseph and Mary (Matt 2:13-23).
