Mt. Carmel is a 20-mile coastal mountain range in northwest Israel near the Mediterranean Sea. The site of Mt. Carmel is most known for the mountaintop confrontation when the prophet Elijah challenged the 450 prophets of Baal to a contest at the altar to determine whose god was in control of Israel (1 Kings 18).
