According to the Bible (1 Samuel 31:6-12), Saul and three of his sons were killed in a battle by the Philistines at Mt. Gilboa. The Philistines took the bodies of King Saul and his sons to Beth Shean "they placed his armor in the temple of the Ashroteths, and they fastened his body to the wall of the city of Beth Shean." (1 Sam 31:10) When Israel's soldiers learned of how the Philistines desecrated the bodies of King Saul and his sons, they traveled to Beth Shean in the cover of night and took down their bodies and gave them a proper burial (1 Sam 31:11-13).
