Luxor (lit. 'the palaces') is a modern city in Upper (southern) Egypt (400 miles south of Cairo) which includes the site of the Ancient Egyptian city of Thebes.
Luxor has frequently been characterized as the "world's greatest open-air museum", as the ruins of the Egyptian temple complexes at Karnak and Luxor stand within the modern city. Immediately opposite, across the River Nile, lie the monuments, temples and tombs of the west bank Theban Necropolis, which includes the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens. When comparing the biblical record with ancient Egyptian records, it is quite likely Amenhotep II was the Pharaoh of the Exodus. The Bible also says that Moses was 80 years old when he returned to Egypt during his stay in Midian. (Ex 7:7; Acts 7:30). Doing the math, it can be calculated that Moses was born around 1526 BC during the reign of Thutmosis I. Thutmosis I had a daughter, Hatshepsut, who then likely would have been the "daughter of Pharoah" who found the baby Moses along the Nile. She grew to be a Pharoah herself, and an accomplished one at that. In Luxor we will visit the Temple of Hatshepsut. Just think that as we visit the Temple dedicated to her, we are likely seeing the history of the adopted mother of Moses.
