The early history of the United States as a nation goes back 700 years to the explorer Columbus sailing from Spain and "discovering" America in 1492. The oldest permanent English colony, Jamestown, was founded over a 100 years later in 1607. Just over 200 years ago, with the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, US history officially started. By comparison, Israeli, or Jewish History, goes back over 4,000 years to story of Abraham (Genesis 12) around 2,000 BC. Around 1,000 BC, Israel's history as a nation officially started when King Saul was annointed by the prophet Samuel to become the first King of Israel (1 Samuel 9-10).
