The answer is that it is a combination of the two. Each person is born with a predisposition for height. Mostly, it is based on how genetics combined from your Mom and your Dad. Some mothers will swear they are going crazy thinking that it seems as if you grew overnight. The fact is, you did. People grow when they sleep. It would stand to reason, therefore, if you do not get the sleep that you require, your body will not have the energy that it needs to grow. During parts of your life when you experience growth spurts, it is very important to get the calories that your body needs to grow effectively. You can see the effects of poor nutrition exaggerated in third world nations. If your body does not have enough energy, or the right kind of nutrition, it will not have the resources to grow the way that it wishes. It will be wasting calories on day to day activities, instead of using those much needed resources to grow tall.

Finally, it is important to get exercise. Sitting on a couch all day will, in fact, have consequences on your stature. If you do nothing to get your heart pumping and the blood flowing, your body will not receive enough oxygen to grow to the maximum potential. So, although it is not true that talking back to your mother will stunt your growth, not eating your vegetables, or staying up instead of sleeping as a teenager, may actually stunt your growth.
