History
History
Hundreds of years ago, something happened that polluted magic without warning.
Anything using magic had no chance of avoiding the corruption that flowed into their bodies. They also didn’t know what it was that was turning their fingers and veins into an inky black hue.
Corruption was first thought to be a contagious and dangerous disease. Only one of these was correct, but anything using or made of magic was treated as a threat and either exiled or destroyed.
After some time, it was figured out that magic itself was the problem; there was something in it that hadn't been there before. Thus, the filter, the “veil,” was created. It is a magical and mechanical device installed over many cities across the globe.
To this day, some still harbor either hatred, some level of distrust, or uneasiness towards magic as it has killed many magic and non-magic beings. The risk still exists, although significantly less, today.
The veil is the only protection at this time from corruption, though it only blocks up to 99% of said corruption. The body, usually, is able to filter out that 1%, but cannot if the caster has exhausted their mana pool and is pulling corrupted magic to cast. The greater the spell/more energy used when not under the protection of the Veil or when casting from an empty energy pool, the greater the amount of corruption the caster takes.
The Veil is not foolproof, and it is possible for citizens abusing their magic or magic items to take on corruption, eventually turning into an Aberration, The Corrupt. Those who turn cannot be cured and are destroyed.
If someone is bitten by an infected creature, they have 48 hours to seek medical attention before the corruption becomes incurable. Self-inflicted corruption, casting when exhausted or while having an empty mana pool, cannot be cured. The believed reason for this is due to magic being channeled directly into the core of a being while a bite instead is surface level, having more time to be treated.
While electricity exists, it is less commonly used than magical means of energy and distributed equally by the Veils in each location across the globe. Any area not under a Veil is forced to use unreliable and unstable electricity, if it's even available in their area, or take on guaranteed corruption by using magic.
Bad Guys
There are no exact bad guys, but a number of ill-intended and psychopathic individuals have joined HAVOC and DOOM throughout history. Others have joined the Criminal Underground that lurks beneath the city.
Good Guys
Much like "Bad guys," there are no real lines as someone with good intentions or evil may join any organization, but those with desires to protect or better the situation tend to join The Order or even the RDA.
Gangs & Cults
It's likely that many exist or have existed in the histories of Howling Hills, and more are likely to be formed by citizens in the future.
Players are absolutely encouraged to create their own IC cults/gangs/etc. They just won't be posted on the website, but we encourage recruitment through RP/activity and using the proper channels in Discord.
Outside
Outside of any Veiled area is a wild and dangerous land. Old structures, carriages, or even steam powered vehicles and tech may be found broken down and reclaimed by the land or infested with The Corrupt.
One well-known incident was from 15 years ago when one of the first anti-corruption aircraft was on a live test flight. It crashed right outside of Howling Hills as it had been attacked by flying Aberrations. All onboard perished. There are many other reports like this all across the globe.
Casting Magic outside of the Veiled Cities is heavily frowned upon as it will result in Corruption.
