Broader Connections

Whenever we analyze a text, we break down its significant parts and connect them to other things inside and outside of the text in order to deepen our understanding of the text as a whole. You can find more information about this from the Analysis page on the Writer's Toolbox.

Making connections outside of the text...

The following slides provide some contextual information which might help you make other connections outside of the text, or guide your interpretation as you read.

Applying a Critical Lens

As you read, consider applying a Feminist and Marxist lens. A Feminist criticism involves reading a text according to feminist ideas and concepts, which revolve around the ways in a society might value one gender or sex over the others. When conducting a feminist criticism, we're thinking about gender structures, the ways in which power is distributed amongst those structures, and the means by which these structures are maintained. Conversely, a Marxist criticism involves reading a text according to Marxist ideas and concepts, which revolve around the ways in a society is separated into different classes. When conducting a Marxist criticism, we're thinking about social structures, the ways in which power is distributed amongst those structures, and the means by which these structures are maintained.

Use The Writer's Toolbox to learn more about various concepts within these two areas.
