Perspective

What Are Perspectives?

A perspective is a particular way of looking at something. In our evermore interconnected world, we continually encounter people from different backgrounds to ourselves who have different perspectives. One way to explore alternative perspectives is through the discussion of literature.

Why Are Perspectives Important?

Learning to identify, assess and respect alternative perspectives improves our ability to communicate with others and respond to cultures and communities that differ from our own. What's more, our understanding of an issue or product is enhanced when we consider perspectives other than our own. Furthermore, by examining the nature of perspective, we learn the limitations and challenges we face when trying to understand the world around us.

How Can I Explore This Concept in English?

This concept can be developed by asking ourselves:

  1. How do texts offer readers new perspectives on life?

  2. How can a character give us a window into a world?
