Communication

What Is Communication?

Simply put, communication is the ability to information. When we engage in communication we are both sending and receiving messages: whether those messages are written, spoken or physically expressed through the voice and body. Whenever we talk about communication skills, we recognize that ideas and the expression of ideas are separate from one another. The idea being expressed could be flawless, yet it might not be accepted because of the manner in which it was shared. Likewise, an idea could be useless, or even dangerous, but it could be passionately accepted because it was shared by an effective communicator.

Why Is Communication Important?

We live in a world where information is continuously being shared at a torrential rate. Therefore, it's important that we become clear and convincing communicators, so that our ideas stand out amongst the white noise of digital space or to an audience that are never further than a moment away from being distracted by their phones. Similarly, it's equally important that we become informed, critical receivers of information. Given the amount of information that's shared online, we have a responsibility to ourselves to learn how to separate what is credible from what is not.

How Can I Explore This Concept in English?

This concept can be developed by asking ourselves:

  1. How do writer's 'speak' to reader's through texts?

  2. To what extent is the text a vehicle for communicating a writer's message?
