Transformation

What Is Transformation?

Texts don't remain the same. Their interpretation changes when they are placed in different cultural or historical contexts. What's more, we change too. As we encounter new ideas or experiences our attitudes, beliefs and opinions alter. When we explore transformation in literature, we reflect on both of these processes: how a text's meaning changes over time and space, and how we are personally affected by the texts we encounter.

Why Is Transformation Important?

What is the purpose of education if not personal development? Taking time to reflect on how texts speak to us personally allows for us to get the most out of what we read. Furthermore, considering how texts change depending on the time or culture in which they are read, allows us to gain a better understanding of the subjective, contingent nature of knowledge, and the important role that context plays in meaning.

How Can I Explore This Concept in English?

This concept can be developed by asking ourselves:

  1. How can the reading of a text be transformative for a reader?

  2. How can words change the world?
