In a professional context

• Academic journal:
  This is a periodical publication that presents research, articles, and findings on a specific academic or professional subject. 

• Accounting journal:
  Also known as a book of original entries, this is a record where all financial transactions are documented in chronological order. 

• Mechanical journal:
  In engineering, the journal is the part of a shaft or axle that rotates within a bearing.
