We are guided by experts at Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, who are helping our community to map the local area, understand existing habitats, and find ways to create or improve natural areas where wildlife can thrive — whether in school grounds, verges, parks and gardens or a simple window box.
In May, the Space for Nature group ran its first ‘mapping walk’ to look at existing wildlife habitats in the village and identify opportunities to enhance or create new spaces for nature.
We were lucky to have a beautiful sunny morning and saw butterflies, dragonflies and even a bee swarm high up in an oak tree (a safe distance away!) during the walk. Thank you to everyone that joined us, and to Katy Froud, Wilder Neighbourhoods Officer from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust for leading the walk.
Our volunteers have now started putting together a Community Action Plan to set out what projects we’d like to do in the village to support wildlife. This might include planting hedgerows, trees and nectar-rich plants, wildlife friendly gardening workshops and raising awareness of how to help hedgehogs. We'll keep you posted!
If you'd like to volunteer with the Space for Nature pillar, please email greeningdenmead@gmail.com.
Whether its a flowerpot, flowerbed, wild patch of your lawn or an entire meadow, planting pollinator-friendly plants can support a wide range of insects. We're asking residents of Denmead to pledge a patch to pollinators and create a corridor of nectar-rich flowers across the village. Please let us know if you take part as we will put your patch on the map at the end of the year to show what we've achieved.
