This project involved collaborating with Shaping Hearts, a community initiative under the Community Development Council (CDC), to design and develop a merchandise line in celebration of SG60. The collection was created to support their upcoming event at Our Tampines Hub, a key community and lifestyle destination in Singapore.
The objective of the assignment was to translate Shaping Hearts’ mission, fostering inclusivity, compassion, and community engagement into meaningful, wearable merchandise that resonates with Singaporeans. The SG60 theme provided an opportunity to reflect on national identity, shared values, and collective growth, while ensuring the designs remained youthful, engaging, and event-appropriate.
Our team focused on creating merchandise that was not only visually appealing but also purpose-driven. The design direction incorporated community-centric messaging, celebratory SG60 elements, and accessible pricing to encourage participation across diverse age groups. Considerations included wearability in Singapore’s climate, practicality for large-scale events, and production feasibility within a community budget framework.
Through this collaboration, the project demonstrated how fashion and merchandise design can serve as tools for social impact strengthening community spirit while supporting a meaningful cause. It also provided valuable experience in working with a real organisation, aligning creative concepts with stakeholder objectives, and designing within real-world event and branding constraints.
SG60 Collection: A Celebration of Singapore Through Food
This collection was created in celebration of SG60, drawing inspiration from the cultural importance of food in Singapore. Food is more than sustenance, it is a shared language across cultures, a bridge between generations, and a symbol of belonging. It reflects Singapore’s multicultural heritage and serves as a powerful unifying force within the community.
Inspired by beloved Nyonya kuehs such as ang ku kueh, tutu kueh, ondeh ondeh, and rainbow kueh lapis, the collection transforms these iconic treats into whimsical bags and charms. These local snacks evoke strong nostalgia and emotional connection, making them instantly recognizable across generations, from older Singaporeans who grew up with them to younger audiences who appreciate their playful, aesthetic appeal.
Designed in pastel tones with multi-wear functionality, the pieces blend Kawaii streetwear influences with Singaporean heritage. The result is a playful yet meaningful collection that celebrates cultural identity, nostalgia, and everyday practicality turning familiar flavors into wearable statements of local pride.
As a student from Temasek Polytechnic, I had the opportunity to collaborate with Shaping Hearts on creating merchandise for their SG60 event at Our Tampines Hub. This partnership allowed me to work on a real-world community project where design goes beyond aesthetics and contributes to a meaningful cause.
Through this collaboration, I was able to apply what I learned in school to develop merchandise that reflects inclusivity, unity, and celebration, values that Shaping Hearts stands for. It was a meaningful experience to see how our designs could support a larger initiative that celebrates artists with disabilities and brings the community together.
