This project was developed for a Fashion Trend Forecasting and Brand Development module, where the focus was on translating trend research into a commercially viable fashion concept. The assignment required the creation of a new fashion brand supported by macro and micro trend analysis, using industry resources such as WGSN, Business of Fashion, and Vogue.
The objective was not only to identify emerging cultural, technological, and consumer shifts, but to interpret these insights into a strong brand identity with a clear USP and market positioning. The final deliverables included a trend research board, brand concept mood board and write-up, target audience analysis, USP and market opportunities, as well as a proposed debut collection outlining key items, materials, colours, and innovation highlights. Emphasis was placed on innovation, technology integration, and commercial viability.
This project explores the development of Heatwaves Studio, a fashion brand conceptualized around the tension between bold self-expression and Singapore’s tropical climate. The assignment challenged the creation of a brand that is both aesthetically distinctive and functionally responsive to environmental realities. Heatwaves Studio answers this by reimagining traditionally heavy fashion elements—such as leather, fur, and layered silhouettes—through breathable, hypoallergenic alternatives, including plant-based leathers, cotton-hemp blends, and recycled synthetics.
The brand centers on tropical-ready layering, proving that edgy, grunge-inspired fashion can exist without discomfort or overheating. Modular construction plays a key role in the design strategy: detachable sleeves, transformable silhouettes, and clip-on accessories allow garments to adapt to movement, weather, and styling preferences. This function-first approach ensures wearers do not have to sacrifice practicality for bold aesthetics.
Beyond material innovation, Heatwaves Studio integrates a retro-digital edge into its identity. Drawing inspiration from tactile, pre-smartphone technology, the brand incorporates interactive elements such as music-playing bags, digital pet charms, and pastel audio accessories. These nostalgic features transform fashion into an experience blending analogue sentiment with modern functionality.
Ultimately, this project positions Heatwaves Studio as a response to climate-conscious dressing, sensory comfort, and youth nostalgia. It demonstrates how rebellious design, modular innovation, and tropical practicality can coexistcreating fashion that is expressive, wearable, and emotionally resonant in a humid urban landscape.
Heatwaves Studio was created from a personal frustration with dressing boldly in Singapore’s tropical climate. The layered, grunge-inspired styles I was drawn to often felt impractical in the heat, forcing a compromise between self-expression and comfort. I wanted to challenge the idea that fashion in humid cities must always prioritise practicality over personality.
At the same time, I noticed a strong sense of nostalgia among Gen Z, a longing for tactile, playful early-digital experiences in today’s hyper-digital world. Heatwaves Studio responds to both tensions: bold aesthetics versus tropical heat, and digital overload versus analog longing.
By reimagining heavy materials in breathable alternatives, incorporating modular design, and integrating interactive retro-tech elements, the brand allows rebellion without discomfort. Ultimately, Heatwaves Studio represents expressive, nostalgic, and climate-conscious fashion, bold without apology and practical without compromise.

Heatwaves Studio integrates sustainability through a circular and innovation-led approach. The brand prioritises longevity through modular multi-use designs, tech repair services, and a slow fashion preorder model to reduce overproduction. Materials are carefully selected, including animal-free alternatives such as Mylo, Piñatex, KOBA, and Savian fur, alongside recycled plastics and low-impact processes like IndigoZero dye and digital printing.
Transparency and traceability are enabled through Digital Product Passports, while takeback programmed and AI-powered textile sorting support circularity. By combining material innovation, right-to-repair principles, and minimal packaging, Heatwaves Studio aims to deliver climate-conscious, functional fashion designed for long-term impact.
