transition between middle and upper

Transition between KS2 and KS3 is really important in order to build on prior learning for our pupils.

All Primary schools are focussing on securing understanding and depth in the year group learning rather than acceleration into the following year group content and the DfE guidance is supporting many schools to address key areas.

With the current learning climate and return to school for many pupils it is more important than ever that mathematics is an integral element of transition processes and conversations.

The NCETM have produced some prioritisation materials to secure firm foundations before moving on to new learning.

Completion and discussion of prioritisation documents will aid transition for pupils in these core areas of learning.

Having some reflection on learning and teaching of the ready to progress criteria in the current and previous year group will ensure a smoother transition for our pupils.

Class teachers will know:

  • what pupils have been taught in previous year groups

  • how they have been taught

  • how effectively pupils have understood and remembered learning

This document contains ready to progress criteria from Year 5 and Year 6 and KS3 core concepts linked to the KS3 Programme of Study.

Middle school teachers complete the last two columns on provision and transition notes. (Year 5 is including because there may be gaps due to time missed in lockdown)

The RTP assessment section contains MS form quizzes covering year 4 to 6. Instructions and suggestions on how to use these quizzes are available here. Similar forms containing quizzes covering KS3 content are available here.

The completed curriculum prioritisation document and data from the quizzes provide detailed information for year 9 teachers.

Year 9 teachers/KS leader can use the data from the quizzes and notes from the curriculum prioritisation document to identify any gaps and adjust the year 9 curriculum.

The RTP assessments and KS3 quizzes can be used in as pre-tests/entry tickets to continue to identify gaps throughout the year.

The KS3 section breaks each strand of the KS3 Programme of Study into a sequence of small steps. Each strand is linked to prior learning from year 5 and year 6 and GCSE content. Further exemplification is provided in the NCETM Secondary PD material. Each strand contains a Microsoft form with example assessment questions from the KS3 Mastery Assessment Material and Secondary Mastery PD material from the NCETM. These quizzes can be adapted and used for assessment throughout KS3.
