Enigma Work Group to support transition

This Work Group aims to strengthen the transition from primary to secondary and middle to upper school by focusing on curriculum and pedagogical continuity over Years 5 to 9.

Summer term 2021aims to:

  • provide a toolkit to identify gaps in core subject knowledge as students move between year groups, across phases and between schools, including in year admissions.

  • identify strategies and resources to address gaps in core subject knowledge using but not limited to the materials in this toolkit.

The transition project starts in the Summer Term of 2021 with a focus on assessment, teaching and learning tools and resources that can be used collaboratively across families of schools to identify gaps in core subject knowledge and develop strategies and resources to address these.

The strategies and materials within this toolkit (including KS2 and KS3 quizzes) could be used as a tool to support Covid recovery.

Who should apply?

Participants should be subject leaders in primary, secondary, middle school and all-through schools who have responsibility for curriculum development, e.g. school mathematics leaders/heads of department, key stage coordinators. Linked ‘families’ of primary (including middle) and secondary schools will work together to facilitate transition in maths learning.

Work Group Overview

This Work Group is focussed on effective transition.

Pupil data will be collected and analysed using the transition quizzes on this site covering Year 4 to 6 assessment and KS3 assessment questions from each strand of the DfE Ready to Progress criteria and the KS3 Programme of Study.

The data analysis from each quiz will identify gaps in learning and implications for teaching, learning and the curriculum.

Participants will consider the potential to identify and address gaps in learning and signposted to relevant support material.

Participants are expected to consider ways to develop the approaches with staff in their own family of schools.
